Utilities have a long list of priorities for the federal government, according to Utility Dive s 2021 State of the Electric Utility (SEU) Survey Report, released this week. Tax credits, enhanced cybersecurity requirements, baseload generation support, a carbon price and strong federal decarbonization targets were among the top issues respondents from public power entities, electric cooperatives, and investor-owned utilities want the federal government to address.
The SEU survey was taken by respondents before the results of the 2020 presidential election were known, and the federal landscape has shifted dramatically since then. The White House is now aiming for a 100% carbon-free power grid by 2035, 15 years earlier than the 2050 target many utilities have set.  ....

Three years after bursting on to the global stage, what s next for the most famous climate activist of her generation?
Greta Thunberg turned 18 a few months ago but occasionally she forgets that. I actually
can vote now, she grins. But the words we children still sometimes slip into her sentences, out of habit. She is sanguine about the change, but it is a bigger shift than she lets on: that phrase has been a core part of her message.
Thunberg became the world s most celebrated climate activist on the back of this idea: that children have to wake the world up to the reality of climate change. She was just 15 when she started the school strike for climate , for which she skipped classes and sat outside the Swedish parliament at first alone and later with dozens, then hundreds of others every Friday. As the movement grew, aided by Thunberg s speeches ....

Energy authorities in South Australia have used their new power to remotely switch off thousands of household solar panels for the first time, making the intervention when electricity demand plunged over the weekend.
Key points:
AEMO was forced to intervene, instructing ElectraNet to stabilise the grid
That resulted in about 12,000 solar generation units being remotely switched off
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) recommended the measure as a means of mitigating the threat to grid security posed by the rapid growth of rooftop solar, which has led to days of very low demand. ....
