Le Bonheur and UTHSC sign agreement to obtain genetic information from 25,000 DNA samples

Le Bonheur and UTHSC sign agreement to obtain genetic information from 25,000 DNA samples
As research into genetic causes of disease began to grow, Le Bonheur Pediatrician-in- Chief Jon McCullers, MD, knew it was time to start building a pediatric DNA biorepository. So in 2015, Le Bonheur s Children s Foundation Research Institute (CFRI) created the Biorepository and Integrative Genomics (BIG) Initiative and began collecting DNA samples from hospitalized children at Le Bonheur with the consent of their parents. We knew then that changes in genes impact health and cause disease.
We began collecting DNA samples in the hope that at some point we would be able to sequence the DNA and use it for research, said McCullers. Five years and more than 10,000 DNA samples later, this dream is becoming a reality. Le Bonheur and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) recently signed an agreement with a leading biotechnology company to obtain genetic information from ....

Research provides a new cornerstone of malaria's evolution with humans

Research provides a new cornerstone of malaria s evolution with humans
New bioarchaeological research shows malaria has threatened human communities for more than 7000 years, earlier than when the onset of farming was thought to have sparked its devastating arrival.
Lead author Dr Melandri Vlok from the Department of Anatomy, University of Otago, says this ground-breaking research, published today in
Scientific Reports, changes the entire understanding of the relationship humans have had with malaria, still one of the deadliest diseases in the world.
Until now we ve believed malaria became a global threat to humans when we turned to farming, but our research shows in at least Southeast Asia this disease was a threat to human groups well before that. ....

Researchers discover new molecular target that could treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

Researchers discover new molecular target that could treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have identified a new molecular target that could potentially treat the deadly, aging-related lung disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The study, which will be published March 10 in the
Journal of Experimental Medicine (
JEM), suggests that targeting a protein called MDM4 could prevent respiratory failure by initiating a genetic program that removes scar tissue from the lungs.
IPF is characterized by the accumulation of scar tissue that stiffens the lungs and makes it difficult for patients to breathe and get sufficient oxygen into their blood. Though the causes of IPF remain unclear, age is a significant risk factor: the disease is estimated to affect 1 in 200 US adults over the age of 70. ....
