Future lung cancer screening strategies should address equity, implementation issues, say experts

Future lung cancer screening strategies should address equity, implementation issues, say experts
Calling the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force s newly released recommendation statement to expand eligibility for annual lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography a step forward, UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers say future changes should address equity and implementation issues.
In an editorial published in
JAMA, Louise M. Henderson, PhD, professor of radiology at UNC School of Medicine, M. Patricia Rivera, MD, professor of medicine at UNC School of Medicine, and Ethan Basch, MD, MSc, the Richard M. Goldberg Distinguished Professor in Medical Oncology and chief of oncology at the UNC School of Medicine, outlined their concerns and offered potential approaches to make the screening recommendation more inclusive of populations that have been historically underserved. ....

Planning documents for the 2021 United Nations Food Systems Summit shed new light on the agenda behind the controversial food summit that hundreds of farmers’ and human rights groups are boycotting. The groups say agribusiness interests and elite foundations are dominating the process to push through an agenda that would enable the exploitation of global food systems, and especially Africa.
The documents, including a background paper prepared for summit dialogues and a draft policy brief for the summit, bring into focus “plans for the massive industrialization of Africa’s food systems,” said Mariam Mayet, executive director of the African Centre for Biodiversity (ACB), who provided the documents to U.S. Right to Know. ....

RNA editing events influence gene expression and phenotypic manifestation

RNA editing events influence gene expression and phenotypic manifestation
Combining computational mining of big data with experimental testing in the lab, researchers at Children s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) have identified RNA editing events that influence gene expression and, in turn, the phenotypic manifestation of that expression.
In analyzing so-called A-to-I RNA editing, in which the adenosine of an RNA molecule is chemically modified into an inosine, the researchers describe how a single nucleotide change by RNA editing can have large downstream effects. The findings were published today in
Genome Biology.
Millions of A-to-I RNA editing sites have been identified across the human transcriptome, but the functions of most RNA editing events are unknown. Understanding how RNA editing affects gene expression and phenotype could help us unravel the genetic basis to many human conditions. ....

Humans Have Surprising Similarities to Strange Creatures From 550 Million Years Ago

Humans Have Surprising Similarities to Strange Creatures From 550 Million Years Ago
9 MARCH 2021
From what little we know of them, they seem so different. Mysterious creatures that lived in the ocean half a billion years ago – headless, limbless things, seemingly alien to us in all respects.

Except they weren t, new research suggests. In fact, the Ediacaran biota – a collection of ancient oceanic life-forms that dwelled on Earth between 570 to 539 million years ago – would have shared a number of genetic similarities with modern metazoans (multicellular animals) including humans, scientists say.
Not that the resemblances border on the uncanny, or anything.
None of them had heads or skeletons, explains palaeobiologist Mary Droser from the University of California, Riverside. ....
