After free agency, and just after the NFL draft closes up shop on May 1, there’s one more way teams can solidify their rosters: The decision to exercise the fifth-year option on first-round draft picks from four years before. The decisions have to be made before May 3, and if the team declines the option on the player, that player becomes a free agent a year earlier, unless a longer-term deal happens.
At this time, none of the first-rounders in the 2018 class have signed second contracts; that’s more likely to happen in the 2022 league year. Teams have those players on relatively cheap deals based on slotted contracts; even 2018 first-overall pick Baker Mayfield will make just $920,000 in base salary, and a $4,936,770 roster bonus. Since arriving as a 1st round draft choice in 2011, defensive end Cameron Jordan has been a consistent star and leader for the New Orleans Saints defense. Even on historically bad defenses through the middle part of the decade, Jordan was respected throughout the league for his production and effort.
Jordan had a down year in 2020 by his lofty standards, but fourth-year DE Trey Hendrickson enjoyed a breakout performance. Hendrickson led the team with 13.5 sacks, 25 QB hits, 33 pressures, and 12 tackles for loss, surpassing his three-year career totals in all categories. ....

What can you say about this guy at this point? After everyone prematurely declared Kawhi Leonard and Giannis Antetokounmpo the two best players in the league last year, LeBron James destroyed everything in his path last season and took his game to an even higher level in the Orlando Bubble. After everyone assumed that he d take it easy this season after the shortest offseason in NBA history, he came out and set the tone for the Lakers championship defense. Despite playing a career-low 32.4 MPG, he s still averaging 23.9 PPG, 7.9 RPG, and 7.5 APG. He s also shooting 38.9 percent from three on decent volume (6.4 attempts per game) as well. If he continues to play this efficiently and productively, and the Lakers finish with the best record in the league, he ll absolutely have a legitimate MVP case. ....
