Surprising trends to keep an eye on the rest of the NBA season

Until recently, an Achilles injury was considered to be a career-ending or at least a career-shortening injury. However, with the way the likes of Kevin Durant, Mike Conley, John Wall, and others have looked this season, we may need to recalibrate expectations for players who suffer this cruel injury moving forward. Durant literally looks exactly the same as he looked before he was injured in the 2019 NBA Playoffs. Now, with KD, we re talking about one of the greatest players in NBA history, arguably the greatest scorer, so there s a chance that he s a statistical anomaly because of his generational athleticism and skill set. But then you look at guys like Mike Conley (two seasons removed from an Achilles procedure) and John Wall, and they both look pretty similar athletically to the versions of the players we saw pre-injury. The 2017 NBA Draft will go down as one of the more infamous drafts in the past decade as it featured a monumental bust at the top of the draft in Markelle Fultz - a seemingly can t-miss point guard prospect out of Washington who got injured and subsequently lost the ability to shoot the basketball to the point where he needed to stop playing basketball to try to fix his yips. Adding insult to injury with this pick, the 76ers traded a future first round pick and the no. 3 overall pick to move up to select Fultz. Meanwhile, the Celtics used that no. 3 pick to draft the one true superstar in this draft at no. 3 in Jayson Tatum. Imagine what the Sixers could have been had they not drafted Fultz? The Brooklyn Nets will be championship contenders all season long because Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are finally back and healthy. With these two perennial NBA All-Stars leading the charge and the depth this Nets team has, very few teams in the league will be able to match-up with them.
Entering the season, everything looked great for the Nets, but they now face their first roadblock of the season as Spencer Dinwiddie suffered a knee injury on Dec. 27th that turned out to be a partially torn ACL. John Collins is the most intriguing player on the Hawks because it s unclear how the Hawks value him having traded for Clint Capela last trade deadline, drafted Onyeka Okongwu with the sixth overall pick, and signed Danilo Gallinari to a three year, $61M deal this offseason. All three are big men, and all three are going to play minutes this season as the Hawks are focused on making a push for the playoffs. Collins is a very good, young player who can do everything you d want from a volume scoring, modern big man, including making three-pointers (40.1 percent last season), so it d be bizarre of Atlanta to move on from him this early in his career. That said, he d sure be an intriguing player on the trade market if the Hawks made him available. ....
