Pistons Gain Ground on Pacers With Cade Cunningham Who Was Just Compared To Lakers' LeBron James

Jul 29, 2021
The Detroit Pistons are expected to draft Cade Cunningham, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports, which means the Indiana Pacers will now be seeing a lot of Cunningham.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Detroit Pistons will take Cade Cunningham out of Oklahoma State with the number one overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft (see Tweet below).
That means that the Indiana Pacers will be seeing a lot of Cunningham as the Pistons are in the Central Division with the Pacers.
Last season, the Pacers finished 34-38 which was good for second in the Central Division, while the Pistons finished last at 20-52.

Trail Blazers emerge as favorites to land Ben Simmons

Trail Blazers emerge as favorites to land Ben Simmons

From Philly to Rip City?
The Philadelphia 76ers have been engaged in trade talks for Ben Simmons, with the Portland Trail Blazers currently holding the shortest odds to land the beleaguered star at 150 by PointsBet.
The Blazers are currently being offered ahead of the Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors, who are each 200, followed by the Miami Heat at 250.
The 76ers have reportedly been seeking an All-Star-caliber player in return, and the Blazers could prove a good fit in that regard. Portland has reportedly turned down multiple offers for C.J. McCollum that would have netted Portland at least a top-15 pick, but dealing him for Simmons would make for a star-studded backcourt with Damien Lillard.

Ben Simmons trade rumors: 76ers likely want one of these 2 stars

The worst kept secret in the NBA is the Philadelphia 76ers’ desire to trade Ben Simmons. The All-Star forward has been involved in trade rumors since his underwhelming performance in the team’s second round defeat to the Atlanta Hawks in the 2021 NBA Playoffs.
Simmons is the biggest name on trade market right now, but that doesn’t mean Philadelphia president of basketball operations Daryl Morey is just going to give him away. The opposite is true according to reports: teams that have engaged the Sixers on Simmons trades have reportedly found out that Morey is asking for an astronomical amount of assets in exchange for the 25-year-old.

According to Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, the Indiana Pacers turned down a trade offer from the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Los Angeles Lakers tried to move up in the NBA Draft (which is on Thursday) and offered Kyle Kuzma and their 22nd overall pick for the Indiana Pacers 13th overall pick and a salary filler.
The Lakers were turned down, according to Scotto.

A pre-draft intel refresher on the Sixers

The most likely outcome remains a trade out of that spot in one form or another, though the Sixers will approach the evening with the same mentality they did last year, when Tyrese Maxey ultimately fell into their laps at No. 21. With many in the organization expecting Maxey to be a potential lottery pick, Philadelphia ultimately decided the value was too good to trade out of that spot in 2020. Given the deep class and the uncertainty surrounding it — league sources believe many teams around the league are over scrutinizing draft workouts as a result of COVID's impact on the college season — the Sixers are prepared to wait to see how the board shakes out unless someone makes a healthy offer ahead of the draft.

There wasn’t too much drama at the top of the 2021 NBA Draft with Cade Cunningham being the consensus top prospect in the annual event.
While the Detroit Pistons considered trading down from the top selection, it became clear leading up to Thursday evening that the Oklahoma State star would be that top selection.
Detroit made it official in Brooklyn, picking up the transcendent talent with the first overall pick in a decision that could change the landscape of the organization big time moving forward.
The 6-foot-8 Cade Cunningham averaged 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists while shooting 40% from distance for Oklahoma State last season. He’s an elite prospect and a future NBA All-Star at either guard position. Think Ben Simmons with an actual shooting ability.

Ben Simmons will not be a member of the Golden State Warriors next season. While the Philadelphia 76ers All-Star will likely be moved at some point soon, a recent report from Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that Golden State turned down what was a seemingly ridiculous offer from the 76ers to acquire Simmons.
According to the NBA insider, the 76ers’ offer included Golden State sending Andrew Wiggins and James Wiseman to Philadelphia. In addition to that, Sixers front office head Daryl Morey requested the seventh and 14th picks in the 2021 NBA Draft as well as two future first-round selections.

NBA Draft 2021: Montverde Academy makes NBA Draft history with four first round picks

Six former Eagles heard their names called, including the top overall selection Cade Cunningham.
Thursday night's NBA Draft was quite the testimonial for Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) as the high school basketball powerhouse became the first team in history to produce four first round picks in the same draft class.
The four first round selections from the 2019-20 Montverde Academy team surpasses 1981-82 Dunbar (Baltimore, Md.) and 1988-89 St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.), which both produced three first round picks. Muggsy Bogues, Reggie Lewis and Reggie Williams of Dunbar were all drafted in 1987 while Terry Dehere, Bobby Hurley and Rodrick Rhodes were picked from the legendary St. Anthony team.

Australian teenager Josh Giddey's NBA dream has become a reality, selected sixth overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA draft.
Giddey, 18, was named NBL Rookie of the Year last season and will make more than $5 million in his first year in the league having secured a place in the top ten picks.
The Aussie will join a team with plenty of youth and could form a strong combination with rising star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the back-court and was was branded the best passer in this year's Draft.
Giddey becomes the first player from the NBA Global Academy, based at the Australian Institute of Sport, to become a first-round pick.

NBA draft winners and losers: Rockets, Pistons find their cornerstones

Winner: Houston Rockets
Houston has a lot of work to do pivoting from the James Harden era. But the Rockets made a significant step in the draft.
First, the Rockets used their No. 2 pick on G League Ignite star Jalen Green, who has a good chance of reaching his stated goal of collecting the Rookie of the Year award and landing on an All-Defensive Team. Then, the Rockets packaged a pair of future first-round picks to Oklahoma City for the No. 16 pick that resulted in Alperen Sengun, who won the MVP of the Turkish League at only 18 years old and has plenty of upside as a big man. The same can be said about using the No. 23 pick on another international prospect (Spain’s Usman Garuba) and the No. 24 pick on a promising combo guard (Arizona State’s Josh Christopher).
