Where do abandoned bikes on campus go?

If you leave your bike on campus for too long, it might end up in Belarus.
Up to 50 to 100 bikes are abandoned annually on campus. The university says the number of abandoned bikes have decreased amid COVID-19. But with the continued closure of SPOKES — which previously upcycled abandoned campus bikes to UVic students — they now have to find international homes.
According to UVic media relations, Campus Security collects abandoned bikes, which are then donated to a local charity that fixes them up and sends them overseas. But as the Martlet discovered, it’s a little more complicated than that: depending on when a bike gets abandoned on campus, it could’ve been sold at police auction, passed along to SPOKES for a new cohort of bike-borrowing students, or simply ‘disposed of.’

Why doesn't UVic have more buildings named after women?

Why doesn’t UVic have more buildings named after women?

If you haven’t been on campus recently, you may not have noticed that the University Centre has been renamed. Now known as the Jamie Cassels Centre, after the previous president whose term ended in October 2020, the building is a stark reminder that there just aren’t many buildings at UVic named after women. In this case, the term ‘buildings’ refers to establishments with classrooms, research labs, or auditoriums, not residences. Although there is a good percentage of residences named after women compared to other buildings at UVic, residences  are not as commonly interacted with by students. UVic has 86 listings on their building directory. Of those 86, 36 are named after people. Only eight include a woman’s name. Of those eight, five are residences.

UVic President Kevin Hall is stepping into the digital limelight. President Hall is conducting two town halls and a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA).  Hall is the first UVic president to host an AMA on Reddit. A town hall for students has not occurred since 2014.
Hall will be answering questions on the r/uvic subreddit for an hour on March 3rd. Additionally, Hall’s virtual town halls will be March 8 and 11. He is hosting two virtual town halls specifically for students: one for graduates from March 8 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m and one for undergraduates on March 11 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. While anyone with a Reddit account can ask a question in the AMA, spots for the town halls are limited to 1000 spots each and registration will close when the event reaches capacity.

The University of Victoria has moved $80 million of their Working Capital Fund into a fossil fuel free fund — meaning the fund no longer has any investments in fossil fuels. Divest UVic, a campus-based advocacy group run by students, faculty, and staff of the university, has been pushing UVic to divest from fossil fuels for eight years.
Emily Lowan, the group’s lead organizer as well as the UVSS Director of Campaigns and Community Relations, says that she is ecstatic.
“This is truly a historic moment for the campaign and for the whole university,” Lowan told the Martlet. “What this tells us is that we have a real opportunity to push for a bold climate justice agenda on campus.”
