Live updates: At least 9 killed in San Jose shooting

From CNN's Stella Chan
Employees at the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) had previous active shooter training at the facility where a gunman, Wednesday, opened fire and killed nine people.
“We provide law enforcement services to VTA, and we, our team had actually trained all VTA employees what to do in an active shooter and had done an exercise specifically in that building with VTA employees,” Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith told CNN affiliate KGO Thursday morning.
“They were told to run, to hide, or to engage suspect. I don’t know what they did. We may have some heroes also with VTA, some of them may have lost their lives, but I think that they reacted as they should have," Smith added.

San Jose shooting suspect spoke angrily about co-workers, his ex-wife says. Here's what else we know about him

The man who
authorities say fatally shot nine people Wednesday morning in San Jose, California, had a history of mood swings, two people who knew him said, and he opened fire on his coworkers at a public transit agency at about the same time his home went up in flames.
The suspected gunman in the latest spate of American gun violence has been identified as Sam Cassidy, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation confirmed to CNN.
The shooter did not exchange gunfire with officers who responded to the shooting, according to police, and it has been initially determined he died by suicide. Authorities have yet to establish a motive for the shooting, but court documents and interviews with those who knew the gunman describe a man with anger issues dating back at least a decade.

Matt Taibbi penned a scathing column declaring that "the American left has lost its mind" and the journalism industry is suffering as a result.Journalist Matt Taibbi blasted members of the media for their transformation from being challengers to what he referred to as the "Spy State" to becoming "agents" of it.
Taibbi wrote a scathing piece on his Substack arguing that "news companies are pioneering a new brand of vigilante reporting" by "partnering with the spy agencies they once oversaw."
He began by recalling WikiLeaks' 2010 release of US government secrets from the war in Afghanistan, which he noted that outlets like The New York Times, The Guardian and Der Spiegel "helped" in exposing the documents that were "devastating to America's intelligence community and military," adding that such revelations later inspired former NSA contractor Edward Snowden to come forward in 2014 to expose the agency's surveillance program, resulting in Pulitzer Prizes for journalists Glenn Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill and Laura Poitras.

Taibbi: Reporters Once Challenged The Spy State. Now, They're Agents Of It

The New York Times, The Guardian, and
Der Spiegel helped release the documents, which were devastating to America’s intelligence community and military, revealing systemic abuses that included civilian massacres and an assassination squad, TF 373, whose existence the United States kept “protected” even from its allies.
The Afghan War logs came out at the beginning of a historic stretch of true oppositional journalism, when outlets like
Le Monde, El Pais, Der Spiegel, The Guardian, The New York Times, and others partnered with sites like Wikileaks. Official secrets were exposed on a scale not seen since the Church Committee hearings of the seventies, as reporters pored through 250,000 American diplomatic cables, secret files about every detainee at Guantanamo Bay, and hundreds of thousands of additional documents about everything from the Iraq war to coverups of environmental catastrophes, among other things helping trigger the “Arab Spring.”

Colonial Pipeline: No issues with fuel supply yet after cyberattack on pipeline, White House says

Hear Biden's response to Colonial Pipeline attack 02:36
(CNN)The White House said Monday there are no issues with fuel supply as officials worked urgently to ascertain the scope and fallout of a ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline, which supplies much of the eastern United States its gasoline -- an incident that laid bare vulnerabilities in the country's aging energy infrastructure.
President Joe Biden and senior White House officials said the administration was working closely with Colonial Pipeline to mitigate the effects of the ransomware attack and subsequent shutdown of the pipeline.
But both the President and officials leading the response repeatedly acknowledged their roles were limited because Colonial Pipeline is a private company, even though it controls the fuel supply to most of the East Coast.
