Adelaide book finals berth with hard-fought point against 10-man Wanderers

The draw ensures the Reds will play finals football but they won't know their position on the table until the conclusion of the Macarthur-Wellington fixture on Friday night.
The Reds took an early lead but soon fell behind after two quick goals from the visitors.
A red card to Tass Mourdoukoutas late in the first half gave Adelaide some hope of salvaging the contest and their playoffs hopes.
United started with intent and dominated play early with Louis D'Arrgio forcing Wanderers keeper Daniel Margush into a great save early on, diving low and tipping around the post.

Adelaide United edged closer to securing a finals berth after a narrow win over Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Sunday.
Adelaide is sitting third, three points behind second-placed Sydney which it hosts at home on Saturday night.
The 1-0 win courtesy of a Craig Goodwin goal didn’t tell the full story.
Adelaide completed a clean sweep, three wins over Victory in a season, for the first time since the A-League’s debut season in 2005/06.
Goodwin scored his seventh goal of the season after a brilliant combination with impressive midfielder Josh Cavallo.

Nabbout injury sours dominant City win over United

The A-League leaders opened up an 11-point lead at the top of the table at AAMI Park on Thursday night, with Jamie Maclaren scoring a brace to become City's all-time leading goalscorer.
But the victory was soured after just 25 minutes when Nabbout succumbed to a left leg injury when attempting a pass.
Nabbout, who missed five games at the start of the season with a hamstring injury and last week's win over Perth with a groin issue, had to be assisted from the field and down the tunnel in distress.
He was quickly replaced by Marco Tilio.

Phoenix held in scoreless draw with ten-man Adelaide

The hosts saw Ryan Strain sent off 16 minutes from time to dampen hopes of a late rally, with Carl Veart's men winless in four.
Adelaide are now six points behind City and have played a game more, with a trip to Melbourne to face their rivals next on the agenda.
Having been held to a goalless draw last time out against Western United, Adelaide started brightly and Stefan Mauk should have capitalised on Josh Cavallo's fine delivery, but instead miscontrolled when well placed.
Tomi Juric saw a strong header saved smartly by Oliver Sail as the home side pressed, but after a blank first half ambition had to take a back seat when Strain got his marching orders for a second yellow card after he kicked the ball away.

Tomer Hemed’s 97th-minute penalty clinched a thrilling 2-1 win as Wellington Phoenix denied Adelaide United the chance to climb to the top of the A-League ladder in a breathless contest on ANZAC Day.
The Israel international kept a composed head to convert from 12 yards deep into stoppage time while chaos was ensuring around him after goalkeeper Joe Gauci was penalised for knocking over Phoenix substitute Jaushua Sotirio during a goalmouth scramble.
Teenage attacker Ben Waine struck for the fourth straight A-League game – becoming the fourth player in Wellington Phoenix history to do so – seven minutes after Adelaide captain Stefan Mauk had fired the Reds ahead in the 51st minute at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.

A-League Goal of Matchweek 16: Ben Halloran, chosen by Alex Brosque

Ben Halloran's nonchalant back-heeled volley scored against Macarthur FC was adjudged Goal of Matchweek 16 Alex Brosque.
The Sydney FC legend chose the Adelaide United winger's goal for both the audacity of the finish and the confidence of the assist, which Joshua Cavallo fired into the box from the left flank on the volley.
Halloran - perhaps thinking he was offside - attacked the ball casually, flicking it past Adam Federici into the back of the net. But a VAR check found Mark Milligan keeping him onside, as Halloran wrapped up all three points for the Reds in an impressive 3-1 victory.

Adelaide turn on the style in victory over Macarthur

The two sides went in level 1-1 at the break but a spot-kick from Craig Goodwin and one for the highlights reel from Ben Halloran steered the Reds to victory.
Macarthur made a bright start but after the opening 10 minutes the hosts began to assert their authority and soon broke the deadlock.
Goodwin and Joe Caletti exchanged passes in a well-worked short corner with Goodwin whipping in a cross which Tomi Juric powerfully headed past Adam Federici.
Goodwin was again involved on the half hour, cutting in from the left and crossing to the far post with his right for Halloran to cushion a pass across the face of goal, but there was no teammate for the tap-in.
