Team streamlines neural networks to be more adept at computing on encrypted data

 E-Mail
BROOKLYN, New York, Wednesday, July 21, 2021 - This week, at the 38th International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 21), researchers at the NYU Center for Cyber Security at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering are revealing new insights into the basic functions that drive the ability of neural networks to make inferences on encrypted data.
In the paper, "DeepReDuce: ReLU Reduction for Fast Private Inference," the team focuses on linear and non-linear operators, key features of neural network frameworks that, depending on the operation, introduce a heavy toll in time and computational resources. When neural networks compute on encrypted data, many of these costs are incurred by rectified linear activation function (ReLU), a non-linear operation.

Ransomware has surged — Why the attacks are 'going crazy right now' [Video]

Ransomware cyberattacks have skyrocketed, and no part of the economy is safe. From infrastructure companies like Colonial Pipeline to meat producers like JBS to a huge attack linked to Russia just over the Fourth of July weekend, the attacks have escalated.
According to George Kurtz, CEO of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike (CRWD), the company is seeing a “massive” increase in ransomware attacks. And they’re targeting everything from private businesses to government entities.
“Ransomware is going crazy right now. What we’ve seen at CrowdStrike, is...almost 50 attacks per week, targeted attacks,” Kurtz told Yahoo Finance. “And it’s only getting worse.”

NYU researchers solve one perovskite production bottleneck

Currently, the p-doping process, achieved by the ingress and diffusion of oxygen into the hole transporting layer, is time intensive (several hours to a day), making commercial mass production of perovskite solar cells impractical. The Tandon team, led by André D. Taylor, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at NYU Tandon, and Jaemin Kong, a post-doctoral associate, discovered a method of vastly increasing the speed of this key step through the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) instead of oxygen. The research, “CO2 doping of organic interlayers for perovskite solar cells,” appears in
Background. In perovskite solar cells, doped organic semiconductors are normally required as charge-extraction interlayers situated between the photoactive perovskite layer and the electrodes. The conventional means of doping these interlayers involves the addition of lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI), a lithium salt, to spiro-OMeTAD, a π-conjugated organic semiconductor widely used for a hole-transporting material in perovskite solar cells. The doping process is then initiated by exposing spiro-OMeTAD:LiTFSI blend films to air and light.
