Ohio State: Buckeyes linebacker commits provide flexibility, versatility

COLUMBUS — The 2022 recruiting cycle for Ohio State started with a major need at linebacker.
The Buckeyes lost four seniors from their current roster following the national championship game loss to Alabama. After this season, Dallas Gant, Teradja Mitchell and K’Vaughan Pope will follow.
So, when Al Washington landed three early commitments from C.J. Hicks, Gabe Powers and Dasan McCullough, there was no doubt about why. The need was there. Those three each fit nicely into a role the Buckeyes were trying to fill. The last few months, however, have provided time and change.
McCullough flipped to Indiana, where he’s now set to play alongside his two brothers and for his father, Deland.

There are a few schools that Mandel has ranked lower that I think could hang with Alabama B. LSU (No. 9) has the talent to beat this group. (It might have the talent to beat actual Alabama this year.) Oregon could win as well. Alabama B’s offensive line probably would struggle to block Ducks defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and linebacker Noah Sewell.
But even if I drop Alabama B behind those teams, it’s still a top-10 squad. Ohio State B wouldn’t be far behind. And that’s what frustrates those who would like to see a little more variety at the top of the sport.

Thirty-two players will have their NFL dreams come true on Thursday night, 259 players will be drafted over the next three days and hundreds more will also get opportunities to compete for roster spots as undrafted free agents.
The 2021 NFL draft is nearly upon us, and Ohio State should be well-represented again, with as many as 14 former Buckeyes having a chance to hear their names called at some point between Thursday’s first round and Saturday’s seventh round.
Justin Fields is Ohio State’s only sure-fire first-round pick this year, and most draft experts aren’t expecting any other Buckeyes to be selected in the first round. Nevertheless, I’ve continued my annual ritual of projecting who all 32 first-round picks will be this year, with hopes of predicting enough picks correctly – though mocking this year’s first round feels as hard as it’s ever been due to the impact COVID-19 had on the college football season and the draft process – to continue my very gradual improvement in The Huddle Report’s mock draft scoring contest.

Stroud started the game for Team Brutus and promptly put his arm on display on his second play in the game, completing a 40-yard deep ball to Chris Olave, who made a leaping catch over newly converted cornerback Demario McCall. INDIANAPOLIS — Ohio State football will play the Big Ten Championship game — and perhaps longer — without one of its offensive stars.
Junior wide receiver Chris Olave was the most prominent name listed as unavailable on Saturday morning’s status report. Sam linebacker Baron Browning and punter Drue Chrisman are the other starters who are out against Northwestern.
Other names of note include defensive ends Tyler Friday and Javontae Jean-Baptiste, backup running back Steele Chambers and freshman receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He was among the players who might have played more in the absence of Olave.
