SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation Thursday overhauling New Mexico’s medical malpractice law and cementing a hard-fought compromise by lawyers, doctors and hospitals.
The bill was at the center of some of the Legislature’s most emotional debates this year, as families testified about the anguish of losing a loved one after medical wrongdoing.

Competing plans to reshape the state’s Medical Malpractice Act – which imposes a $600,000 cap on damages – moved through the Legislature for much of the 60-day session, with lawyers and health care providers on opposite sides of the debate.

SANTA FE – As the session enters its final weeks, New Mexico legislators are evaluating two starkly different proposals aimed at ensuring doctors can afford insurance for medical malpractice claims – while also protecting the rights of patients and families harmed by medical errors.
It’s a debate that’s brought to the Roundhouse powerful testimony by physicians, hospital executives, trial lawyers and New Mexicans who have lost loved ones to medical mistakes.

It’s no secret New Mexico’s health care system faces significant challenges, just coming up for air after the flood of COVID-19 patients stressed intensive care units and threatened to overwhelm hospital staff. That was true pre-COVID-19, and it is true now.
An Albuquerque Journal report in 2019 found the state ranked 48th among 50 states for access to health care in a study that included the number of physicians per 100,000 population – a problem exacerbated by the fact we have the oldest doctor workforce in the nation, with many physicians eyeing retirement. When the pandemic hit, we learned the hard way we were near the bottom nationally in hospital and ICU beds per capita. Providers struggle with Medicaid reimbursement rates that don’t cover their costs – a big deal since we just became No. 1 nationally in Medicaid patients at 43% of the population.

Town Talk | New winery in downtown Lecompton inspired by fruit, history and crazy vacation ideas | News, Sports, Jobs - Lawrence Journal-World: news, information, headlines and events in Lawrence, Kansas

Empty Nester's Winery, 338 Elmore St. in Lecompton, opened in January 2021 after being years in the making.
It is rare that I ever remember the ending of a story that begins with the question “What are we going to do with those 30 bottles of wine on the shelf?” But Troy Clark remembers the end of his story, and it actually is on display as a new winery in downtown Lecompton.
Clark and his wife, Vickie, have opened Empty Nester’s Winery in Lecompton, which of course, is in northwest Douglas County and about a 20-minute drive from Lawrence.
