President Joe Biden has nominated Chris Magnus, a gay man who currently serves as the police chief in Tucson, Arizona, to be the next commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Magnus, who was one of six Homeland Security nominees announced by the White House this week, previously served as the police chief of Richmond, California, and Fargo, North Dakota, prior to his current stint in Tucson. He is married to Terrance Cheung, the former chief of staff to Richmond’s mayor. ....

Known for toting a “Black Lives Matter” sign and being an openly gay and married police chief, former Richmond chief of police Chris Magnus has been nominated as Biden’s commissioner of Customs and Border Protection.
“Openly gay police chief” is not a phrase that one is used to hearing much, but that phrase arrived in the Bay Area in 2006 when Fargo, North Dakota chief of police Chris Magnus took the same position in Richmond. He would marry mayor Tom Butt’s chief of staff Terrance Cheung, and according to SFGate, Magnus was “said to be the first openly gay male police chief to marry.” ....

President Joe Biden plans to nominate former Richmond police chief Chris Magnus to serve as the commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection, according to a statement from the White House.
Magnus, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, served as head of the Richmond Police Department from 2006 until 2016 when he began serving as chief of police in Tucson, Ariz. ....

WASHINGTON – Today, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate key leadership for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; John Tien for Deputy Secretary, Jen Easterly for Director of Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency, Ur Jaddou for Director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, Chris Magnus for Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Jonathan Meyer for General Counsel, and Robert Silvers for Under Secretary for Strategy, Policy, and Plans.
John Tien, Nominee for Deputy Secretary
John Tien previously served in the Obama Administration as the National Security Council Senior Director for Afghanistan and Pakistan from 2009-2011. Since 2011, Tien has been a Citigroup managing director. Prior to joining Citi, Tien was a combat arms officer for 24 years in the active duty U.S. Army and retired in 2011 as a Colonel. He is a veteran of three combat tours in Iraq to include being the Task Force 2-37 M1A1 Abrams Tank Battalion ....
