New mayor takes reigns as residents say farewell to Merle Aaron Written by Cynthia Calvert Published: 17 May 2021
After 16 years of public service to the citizens of Humble, Merle Aaron has retired. Aaron was feted by the city’s numerous employees, as well as family and friends, at a luncheon Friday, May 7 at the Humble Civic Center.
Amid flowers, balloons, fajitas and cupcakes, City Manager Jason Steube, Harris County Commissioner Tom Ramsey and new Mayor Norman Funderburk reminisced and shared fond memories.
Aaron began his public duty as a council member; the last six years he served as mayor.
Steube joked that he has known four Humble mayors and “I can say, you are definitely among the top four.” Steube and Aaron led the city through several hurricanes, the pandemic and “other difficulties” but Stuebe had nothing but praise for Aaron.
‘The good, the bad and the ugly’ Written by Cynthia Calvert Published: 04 May 2021
Harris County Commissioner Jack Cagle recently told the Kingwood Area Republican Women his take on ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ of current conditions in Harris County. Cagle, a Republican, sits on the county’s preeminent decision-making board, albeit in the minority. He is a Republican and one of two on the five-seat group.
“There are many, many 3-2 votes,” he said to the ladies’ April luncheon.
In the 2018 election, dozens of Republicans lost their positions when a Democratic surge sent dozens of officials home, including County Judge Ed Emmett, who was replaced by Lina Hidalgo.

The second round of campaign financial disclosures for the Humble ISD school board election show Martina Dixon raised the most money during the second reporting period (March 23- April 21.) She raised $5,980. Chris Parker had the second highest donated, with a reporting of $5,352. Ken Kirchhofer raised $2,908.53 and Robert Sitton raised $2,763.04. The reports are posted at HumbleISD.net.
Dixon benefited from a $2,500 donation from Rick Walker, a Kingwood resident who ran for Congress in 2018. The first round of reports showed he donated the same amount to Sitton, Parker and Janie Branham. U.S. Congressman Dan Crenshaw, who defeated Walker, donated $1,000 from his campaign to Sitton.
