WASHINGTON Three months after more than 25,000 National Guard troops poured into the nation’s capital to secure President Joe Biden’s inauguration, Defense Department and Guard officials are losing patience and are denying some of the city’s recurring requests for troops to protect D.C.
According to defense officials, the Army on Monday approved only about a quarter of the Guard troops requested by city officials to provide security in case of unrest after the upcoming verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin. The D.C. National Guard confirmed that acting Army Secretary John Whitley has approved the deployment of 250 troops, but officials said the city’s initial request was for as many as 1,000. ....

Thousands of National Guard troops called back home

Mr. Trump’s Senate trial is scheduled to begin Feb. 8.
“We are providing assistance such as security, communications, medical evacuation, logistics and safety support to state district and federal agencies,” the National Guard said in a statement.
The announcement comes after it was revealed that more than 100 Guard troops stationed at the Capitol for President Biden’s inauguration have tested positive for COVID-19. Hundreds more troops are in quarantine.
Defense officials are pointing to the cramped rest and working areas as the reason for the spread, pointing to relocating troops to the parking garage as the outbreak’s cause.
Outraged politicians on both sides of the aisle fumed after photos of the troops hunkering down in a cold, cramped parking garage instead of the Capitol quickly went viral. Guard members were moved to the garage to take their break time, according to Politico, which first reported the story. ....

HELENA, Mont. Gov. Greg Gianforte said he requested Friday that National Guard members deployed to Washington for President Joe Biden’s inauguration return to Montana after finding out that troops were sleeping outdoors.
“Like many of you, I saw the images and read the reports that thousands of National Guardsmen were forced to leave the Capitol building and were sent outside or to parking garages to rest. Some had no heat or access to facilities. This is no way to treat men and women in uniform,” Gianforte said during a news conference, calling it “a national disgrace.” ....
