As the newly elected leader of Blair County’s NAACP chapter, political science major Andrae Holsey has no plans to slow down his fight for social justice.

As a child, Andrae Holsey listened to his father tell stories of growing up in the 1950s and walking eight miles every day to attend a segregated school. He heard him talk about his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
Holsey watched with his own eyes as the KKK roamed through the town in Virginia, where he and his family lived for a time. ....

A few weeks ago, Alice Lawrence, who worked for years with the late Blair County NAACP President Don Witherspoon, didn’t sound optimistic about the prospects of replacing her friend, who died Dec. 26 of COVID-19.
“Those are some big shoes to fill,” Lawrence said. “I don’t think anybody can fill them.”
The state president of the NAACP, however, seems optimistic that presidential succession at the local branch will work out, after meeting recently with branch leaders and identifying a “young man” who will be voted on by state leadership Wednesday to become interim Blair president.
“The Blair County NAACP is going to be in very good and capable hands,” Kenneth Huston said. “It will be functioning and active.” ....

The 9-year-old daughter of a friend of the president of the Blair County Democratic Committee found it hard to believe that there had never been a female U.S. vice president before Kamala Harris was sworn in Wednesday.
“She was taken aback,” Gillian Kratzer said of her friend’s daughter. “It speaks to the fact that so long as (there has been) American history, essentially half of our talent pool has been left by the wayside.”
Harris is not only the first woman, but also the first Black woman and first person of Asian descent elected vice president. ....
