A patient in sickle cell crisis who rang 999 from his hospital bed after being refused oxygen would not have died if medical staff had recognised his symptoms and offered a blood transfusion sooner, a coroner has said.

A football data analyst was forced to call 999 from his temporary bed in a hospital corridor after he was denied oxygen despite his organs failing, an inquest has heard.
Evan Smith was admitted to North Middlesex University Hospital in April 2019 with jaundice.
He later complained of hip pain and showed low blood-oxygen levels classified as serious - but he was declined oxygen by medical staff. 
Mr Smith then called the London Ambulance Service from his hospital bed asking them to take him to A&E. ....

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is less effective against the South African mutated variant, early data from a small study claimed to show last night in a development that will raise anxiety about global inoculation efforts.
A small trial of just 2,026 people in South Africa found the jab had limited efficacy in protecting against mild and moderate disease caused by the mutant strain, which has been found in 11 people in the UK who have not recently travelled from abroad.
However nobody died or was hopitalised during the study by South Africa s University of the Witwatersrand and Oxford University, which has not yet been published but has been seen by the Financial Times.   ....

The United States recorded its second deadliest day of the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday with 4,229 American fatalities. 
It marks the third time that the daily death toll has surpassed 4,000 and is second only to January 12 on which 4,327 deaths were recorded, according to a DailyMail.com analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

A U.S. soldier was found unresponsive at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait on Wednesday, just nine days after another soldier at the base died during routine troop movement.
The Army Central Command shared news of the soldier s death but did not identify the soldier, as they are waiting until 24 hours after the next-of-kin is notified.
