'Let's make affordability part of the organic conversation': Affordability and accessibility in organic food


Organic sales are on the rise in Europe. But, for some consumers, the price premium charged by the sector acts as a barrier. According to Alara Wholefoods founder Alex Smith, organic manufacturers need to make ‘affordability part of the conversation’.
The European market for organic food continues to grow. According to FiBL, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture, sales reached €45bn in 2019 with a growth rate of 8% in the region. In the decade 2010-2019, the European market value has more than doubled, the organisation noted.
Increased farmland dedicated to organic production also follows this upward trajectory. Between 2010 and 2017, organic farmland increased by 70%, data from Eurostat demonstrates. ....

An expanding – and increasingly affluent – middle class is fueling demand for premium products in China, which has the world’s second largest population of children. Organic food is seen as premium, safe, healthy and natural, and the country’s organic market is expected to grow by 16.3% between 2020 and 2025. According to Euromonitor International, one of the main categories driving growth is baby food and formula.
A Lindberg International study also showed in China, 57% of young mothers consider organic a highly important food attribute.  Many choose organic formula for infants, but there are opportunities for organic products for older children. Over half (57%) of respondents admitted that they d accidentally eaten a full-sized bag of snacks in one sitting. And 45% have eaten a full meal composed entirely of snacks when they d only intended to eat a single snack.

UK scientists to trial genome-edited wheat developed to slash acrylamide levels
Scientists from Rothamsted Research – the longest-running agricultural research institute in the world – have used genome editing to develop a type of wheat that is less likely to produce acrylamide when baked.
The UK researchers are hoping to take their trials to the next level. The team has applied to the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to run a field trial of the
genome-edited wheat​​ – the first such trial to be carried out in Europe – slated to begin in the autumn.
Acrylamide was first discovered in food in 2002 and is described as ‘extremely hazardous’. ....
