Budget talks overshadowed as more issues pile up for Suga

The Lower House began debating the fiscal 2021 budget late this week, but the focus has been on the mounting pressure on Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on issues ranging from a potential ethics violation involving his son to a sexist remark by the Tokyo Organising Committee chair.
In the Lower House Budget Committee, the main battleground between the administration and opposition parties, opposition lawmakers attempted to shake the prime minister with a series of attacks, but he kept his ground, even though he at times raised his voice.
Although the events unfolding this week are not directly tied to the prime minister himself, they could further inflame mistrust toward the administration which is already nearing its boiling point over Suga s coronavirus response. ....

Third time's a charm? Japan gets another high-level U.S. commitment to defending Senkakus

Tokyo has received yet another commitment from the Biden administration on defending the Japanese-controlled, Chinese-claimed Senkaku Islands as Beijing continues its ramped-up activity near the islets.
Newly confirmed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday became the third high-level official in a week to reaffirm that the uninhabited islands, known in China as the Diaoyu, fall under the U.S.-Japan security treaty.
In a 30-minute phone call just hours after his Senate confirmation, Blinken told Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi that there was “no change” to the U.S. position on Article 5 of the treaty, which states that the U.S. will defend territories under Japan’s administration in the event of an armed attack, according to the Foreign Ministry. ....
