The Netherlands on Friday agreed to extradite the alleged leader of an Asian drug syndicate, Tse Chi Lop, to Australia.
The Chinese-born Canadian national, who has been compared to Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, was arrested in January at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport at the request of Australian police while he was in transit from Taiwan to Canada.
The Dutch government will take a final decision on extradition.
The defence said it would appeal, and the Dutch Supreme Court will decide the matter.

Tse Chi Lop is accused of heading up a multibillion-dollar drug operation spanning several countries in the Asia-Pacific, from Japan to New Zealand.
A Dutch court has approved the request for him to be extradited, following his arrest in January.
His lawyer says he will appeal.
Tse, a Chinese-born Canadian, is suspected of leading one of the world's biggest drug syndicates. He is said to have led The Company, which dominates a US$70 billion (NZ$99bn) illegal drugs market across Asia.

Australia needs a Magnitsky Act | The Strategist

Australia’s war against organised crime has hotted up. The arrest of accused drug lord Tse Chi Lop and allegations of large-scale money laundering in Australian casinos have exposed to the public the deep economic connections transnational and organised crime syndicates have established here, and the scale of the threat we face.
The extent of these connections adds urgency to the recent call by the human rights subcommittee of the parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade for Australia to adopt Magnitsky-style legislation.
The US Magnitsky Act began as an effort to hold officials of foreign countries accountable for human rights abuses. The legislation, which applies globally, gives the US government the legal means to the freeze assets of and ban US entry to those it lists for involvement in human rights abuses. Canada and the UK have introduced similar legislation.

Downfall of Asia's 'Biggest Drug Lord' Seen Unlikely to Dent Regional Narcotics Trade

Given the estimated US$70 billion being made each year in Asia's drug trade, regional experts say recent arrests of two key drug figures are seen as unlikely to dent the long-term flow of narcotics.
Dutch police said in January they had arrested Tse Chi Lop, allegedly the leader of the Asian drug syndicate known as The Company or Sam Gor (Brother No. 3 in Cantonese). It is alleged to have made tens of billions of dollars each year off drugs in the region. Then in February, it was announced that Lee Chung Chak, suspected of being a second leader of the syndicate, had been arrested.

Arrest in Thailand of second drug kingpin tightens dragnet on huge syndicate

A second senior leader of a vast drug syndicate has been arrested, a Thai narcotics official said, as a transnational dragnet tightens on the Sam Gor group, which police say dominates the $70 billion annual Asia-Pacific drug trade. The October arrest of Hong Kong citizen Lee Chung Chak in Bangkok preceded last month's high-profile arrest in the Netherlands of Tse Chi Lop, a China-born Canadian national who police suspect is the top leader of the syndicate, also called "The Company". Lee, 65, is a former prison mate of Tse's suspected of being involved in drug trafficking for four decades.
