Harris on COVID relief, role of women in democracy
United Nations — Vice President Kamala Harris told U.N. diplomats Tuesday "the status of women is the status of democracy," mentioning Eleanor Roosevelt's historic work at the global body.
Harris made the remarks in a statement she delivered on behalf of the Biden administration to the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the U.N.'s second-largest annual event. Her statement was pre-recorded because she is on a road tour to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and other cities to encourage Americans to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.

1Electors were chosen by legislatures in many states, not by popular vote.
2In this election, and in others until 1804, each elector voted for two individuals without indicating which was to be president and which vice president. Because the two houses of the New York legislature could not agree on electors, the state did not cast its electoral vote. North Carolina and Rhode Island had not yet ratified the Constitution.

BET Presents 2020 Election All-Stars

Joe Biden and
Kamala Harris elected to the White House is no different. Black women, in particular, played a major role in helping the new president and vice president usher in their progressive administration and this is our opportunity to say, thank you.
Here’s a list of the change agents and achievers who did the most to protect our communities, help to safeguard our democratic right to vote and vowed to ensure what was promised on the campaign trail becomes reality.

'A Moment for All of Us to Be Proud' - Vice President Kamala Harris Takes Oath of Office | Global Indian

When Anuradha Bakshi immigrated to the U.S. in 1971, she would frequently be questioned by American women as to why India had so many prominent female politicians, such as the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, the first female president of the United Nations General Assembly.
“They would ask me: ‘How long will it take to get a woman into the White House? I said 50 years,’” the Indian American woman recalled to
India-West.
Fifty years later, Bakshi, with her daughter Shikha and grand-daughter Avani, watched her prediction realized, as Vice President Kamala Devi Harris took her oath of office Jan. 20 morning, sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the grounds of the Capitol Building. The nation’s new vice president breaks several barriers: she is the first Indian American, the first Black person, and the first woman to hold the post.

"Same Kamala": Harris' friends say vice president has always been fearless
Stacey Johnson-Batiste and Vice President Kamala Harris have been best friends since they were 5 years old. They went to the same kindergarten in Oakland, California.
"I remember us running around a lot, swinging on swings, slides" Johnson-Batiste told "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King.
Harris, who was sworn in as the first female, Black and South Asian American vice president on Wednesday, exudes confidence. That's the way she's always been, Johnson-Batiste said.
"She's never been shy. She has always been kind. She would stand up for what's right," Johnson-Batiste said. "She's always had a certain magnetism, a certain charisma. She is down to earth, she's humble. She still loves to laugh. She's the same Kamala I've always known."
