Harris resigns Senate seat ahead of swearing in as VP


The vice president-elect discussed her resignation as senator in an op-ed published by The San Francisco Chronicle on Monday, titled “Serving as California’s senator has been an honor. But this is not a goodbye.” Harris, who entered office in 2017, is expected to continue casting votes in the Senate, serving as a tie-breaker since Democrats and Republicans each hold 50 seats.

As senator-turned-Vice-President Walter Mondale once pointed out, the vice presidency is the only office in our government that belongs to both the executive branch and the legislative branch. What can you say during times like these?
We are better than this.
Our guiding principles are bigger than mob intimidation, better than sneering violence, broken glass and tear gas. We’re better than having to whisk the vice president of the United States out of harm’s way when the mob pours in.
Maybe I should rephrase: We SHOULD be better than this. But on Jan. 6 we weren’t, and it’s been this way for some time now. Violence is the order of the day and armed people are putting our nation and its Constitution in peril.
We’ve never done this before — this has not been our response even at the worst moments in our history. We’ve marched; we’ve protested. Some of the protests have turned violent. But the outliers have always been just that: outliers. ....

Donald Trump, Mike Pence speak for first time since US Capitol attack


A senior administration official says the two met on Monday evening in the Oval Office.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private meeting, said the two had a good conversation , discussing the week ahead and reflecting on the administrations accomplishments over the last four years.
The official said that during the meeting, both men agreed that those who broke the law and stormed the Capitol last week do not represent the America first movement backed by 75 million Americans and pledged to continue working on behalf of the country for the remainder of their term.
The person did not mention Trump s lingering anger over Pence s refusal to go along with his unconstitutional scheme to try to overturn the results of the November election that he lost. ....
