Uganda: Museveni's re-election and its regional and international implications

With the completion of the swearing-in ceremony on May 12, 2021, Yoweri Museveni, aged 76, has begun his sixth consecutive term in the presidential office of Uganda. Ironically, it was Museveni who was critical of the African rulers that were corrupt and had ‘overstayed’.  However, he already is in the company of African rulers of the past decade, such as Muammar Gaddafi (Libya), Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe), Omar al-Bashir (Sudan), and Idriss Déby (Chad) who governed their respective states with an iron hand.
As a shrewd ruler, Museveni manipulated political institutions to ensure his survival. Through constitutional amendments, the term limit as well as the age limit of 75 to hold Presidential office was removed in 2005 and in 2017, respectively. When Uganda conducted its elections in January 2021, Museveni’s National Resistance Movement Party (NRM) was declared elected by 58.64 percent of votes cast on January 14, 2021. However, the voter turnout was low because just 10 ....

Uganda’s incumbent President Yoweri Museveni of the National Resistance Movement Party (NRM) was reelected on January 14, 2021 for a sixth term in office. The Ugandan Electoral Commission announced that he had defeated his National Unity Platform Party (NUP) opponent Robert Kayagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, capturing 58% of the ballots compared to Wine’s 34% (voter turnout lagged at 52%). Museveni described last month’s vote as the “most cheating-free” election in Uganda’s history. However, the government’s official results met with near immediate universal scrutiny and skepticism by Wine as well as by observers worldwide.
Former US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Tibor Nagy, described this election as “fundamentally flawed,” and the US State Department is reportedly considering “a range of targeted options” to communicate its alarm over the erosion of Uganda’s democratic processes inclu ....

Ugandan President Museveni arrests opposition rival Bobbi Wine
After declaring victory and a sixth, five-year term in office with a much-reduced majority, President Yoweri Museveni put his main opposition rival, the 38-year-old musician Bobbi Wine of the newly formed National Unity Platform party (NUP), under house arrest.
When protests erupted after the announcement of the election results widely seen as rigged, amid rising social and economic hardship in the wake of the pandemic, the security forces dispersed the crowds, killing at least two people, and cordoned off the party’s offices in the capital Kampala.
Speaking to the media surrounded by soldiers and police, Wine said he was “worried about my life and the life of my wife.” ....
