Community Land Scotland: Magnus Davidson becomes youngest board member


ALEADING commentator on Highland issues has been appointed to the board of Community Land Scotland. At 29, Thurso-based Magnus Davidson is the first resident of the “far north” to become a director of the membership organisation for community landowners across Scotland. He is also the youngest board member to date.
Davidson’s name will be familiar to anyone following the debates on community regeneration, land use, repopulation and the renewable energy sector in the Highlands and Islands. He has become an important advocate for the cause of strengthening Scotland’s most remote and fragile communities.

Caithness councillors agree to give £4700 to local groups

Caithness members of Highland Council have allocated more than £4700 to local groups.
Ward discretionary approvals in February by Thurso and Northwest Caithness councillors included £1500 for Thurso Community Café towards the purchase of a coffee machine and cooker.
They also agreed to give £1428.99 to Thurso Community Development Trust to help with Covid-19 community support.
The councillors for both local wards – Thurso and Northwest Caithness, and Wick and East Caithness – approved £1440 for Budding Engineers, a community interest company that supports primary and secondary pupils, and £400 for the Caithness Klics young carers project. ....

Councillors have agreed to spend more than £40,000 upgrading ageing CCTV cameras in Wick and Thurso.
Members of Highland Council’s Caithness committee voted to use town centre funding to digitalise the analogue systems and connect them to the authority’s CCTV monitoring office.
A total of £16,100 will be used to upgrade the Wick town centre system and £25,625 for Thurso.
In September the Scottish Government announced extra funding through the Town Centre Fund as part of its national economic recovery stimulus package. Highland Council received an additional £1,066,000, providing an extra £56,104 for investing into Thurso and Wick. ....

An award-winning Scottish comedian is preparing to host a live online show to help raise money to support his grandmother’s hometown of Thurso.
Daniel Sloss will give fans a rare glimpse into life in the rural Highland town during a special stream of Day Drinking with Dan next week.
The Scottish actor, writer and comedian spent many summers growing up in Thurso and even made a rare appearance performing at Skinandis nightclub.
