Exercising in morning might make it harder to remember things that evening, study suggests
Exercising first thing in the morning makes long-term memory recall increasingly hard as the day continues, according to surprising results from an undergraduate student-led study that challenges conventional wisdom about the positive role physical activity plays in making new memories.
“If you’re going to exercise in the morning, you might have a little trouble remembering things you learn later in the day,” said Arth Pahwa, medical student in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and lead author on the study.
The idea for the study originated with Pahwa, who was an undergrad student in the Faculty of Science in 2015 when he started up an early-morning exercise routine. ....

New test enables rapid detection of mild cognitive impairment as well as dementia

Researchers from Kanazawa University developed a new test for dementia and mild cognitive impairment. The computerized assessment battery for cognition (C-ABC) was able to accurately discriminate mild cognitive impairment from normal cognition, and also distinguish dementia from mild cognitive impairment and normal cognition, and took only 5 minutes to complete. This test could increase the early detection of dementia, thus improving treatment options and outcomes for this patient group. ....

Research over the last decade has shown that loneliness is an important determinant of health. It is associated with considerable physical and mental health risks and increased mortality. Previous studies have also shown that wisdom could serve as a protective factor against loneliness. This inverse relationship between loneliness and wisdom may be based in different brain processes.

WHAT:
The Brain Prize has been awarded to Michael A. Moskowitz, M.D., a professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Charlestown, who also is supported by an NIH grant. The Brain Prize is the world s most prestigious award for brain research and is awarded by the Lundbeck Foundation, Denmark. Dr. Moskowitz will receive the prize along with three other scientists for their pathbreaking contributions that led to novel migraine therapies.
The Lundbeck Foundation said, Moskowitz showed in experimental models that a migraine attack is triggered when trigeminal nerve fibres release neuropeptides that lead to dilated (opened up) blood vessels of the meninges, inflammation, and pain.. He was the first to propose that blocking the action of released neuropeptides could be a new approach to treating migraine. ....

IU researchers discover new potential for functional recovery after spinal cord injury

Credit: IU School of Medicine
Researchers at Indiana University School of Medicine have successfully reprogrammed a glial cell type in the central nervous system into new neurons to promote recovery after spinal cord injury revealing an untapped potential to leverage the cell for regenerative medicine.
The group of investigators published their findings March 5 in
Cell Stem Cell. This is the first time scientists have reported modifying a NG2 glia a type of supporting cell in the central nervous system into functional neurons after spinal cord injury, said Wei Wu, PhD, research associate in neurological surgery at IU School of Medicine and co-first author of the paper. ....
