The House approved President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion pandemic rescue plan in a 219 to 212 vote early Saturday morning, sending the measure to the Senate as Democrats race to pass it into law before boosted unemployment payments expire next month.
All but two Democrats supported the sprawling coronavirus relief package, with zero Republicans backing it a major step toward enacting the White House’s first major legislative priority amid dueling public health and economic crises. ....

House GOP grapples with Greene, Cheney as it defines itself

House GOP keeps Cheney as No. 3 leader, stands by Greene
By ALAN FRAM, BRIAN SLODYSKO and KEVIN FREKINGFebruary 4, 2021 GMT
WASHINGTON (AP) House Republicans decided Wednesday to stand by two GOP lawmakers who have polarized the party, voting to retain Rep. Liz Cheney as their No. 3 leader and saying they’d fight a Democratic push to kick Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene off her committees.
In a 145-61 secret-ballot vote, House Republicans overwhelmingly rebuffed a rebellion by hard-right conservatives to toss Cheney, R-Wyo., from leadership after she voted last month to impeach then-President Donald Trump.
Hours earlier, after Democrats slated a House vote for Thursday that would remove Greene from her committees, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy ridiculed them for it. His comments signaled he was dismissing bipartisan demands that the hard-right Georgia Republican be punished for her online embrace of racist and violent views and bizarre conspiracy theories. ....

The House of Representatives will vote Thursday on a resolution to strip Greene of her committee assignments.
The step to remove Greene from committee assignments comes amid widespread criticism for a series of extreme remarks that she made before winning her congressional seat.
“Not only do they force the [Republican] party to say whether or not they agree with them, but they are a gift to Biden and the Democrats because they don’t allow Republicans to effectively communicate their message opposing President Biden’s agenda,” said Siegfried. ....

House GOP grapples with Greene, Cheney as it defines it...

WASHINGTON (AP) House Democrats planned a showdown vote for Thursday over stripping Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of her committee assignments for her endorsement of racist and conspiratorial views, as the chamber s top Republican signaled he would not bow to bipartisan demands to punish her.
The decision by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., came Wednesday as Republicans also grappled over what to do about Rep. Liz Cheney, their No. 3 leader, after she backed Donald Trump s impeachment. The decisions over how to handle the two Republican lawmakers subjected the GOP to a politically agonizing test of its direction as it moves beyond Donald Trump’s presidency. ....
