The United States has seen a wide range of winters over the past century everything from warm, mild years where folks could stroll leisurely through parks in February, to turbulent, frigid seasons where people had to hunker down inside. There were years where blizzards swept in unannounced, covering huge swaths of the country in blankets of snow, while other years brought hurricane-force winds to cities and towns across the nation.
The Midwest region is particularly susceptible to cold winters, especially in states like Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Michigan. In these places, residents lie in the path of both the low-pressure systems that originate in Alberta and travel southward (sometimes called Canadian clippers ) and the shortwave low-pressure systems that come from the southwest, traveling northeast toward the Great Lake ....

More than 120 winters have come and gone since the so-called “Great White Hurricane,” but this whopper of a storm still lives in infamy. After a stretch of rainy but unseasonably mild weather, temperatures plunged and vicious winds kicked up, blanketing the East Coast in snow and creating drifts up to 50 feet high. The storm immobilized New York, Boston and other major cities, blocking roads and wiping out telephone, telegraph and rail service for several days. When the skies finally cleared, fires and flooding inflicted millions of dollars of damage. The disaster resulted in more than 400 deaths, including 200 in New York City alone. In the decade that followed, partly in response to the 1888 storm and the massive gridlock it wrought, New York and Boston broke ground on the country’s first underground subway systems. ....

The Great Blizzard of 1888 remains one of the most devastating storms in US history with a death toll of over 400.
The Blizzard of 1996 resulted in 150 deaths and around $3 million in damages across the Northeast.
During the bomb cyclone in March 2019, 25 states were affected.
While some parts of the US see snow much of the year, other states are about to enter their frostiest season. This week, the Northeast is preparing for its first big storm of the winter. ....
