Expansion draft predictions: 30 players the Seattle Kraken will take

We’re just days away from the Seattle Kraken expansion draft, as the NHL’s 32nd team will pluck 30 players off existing teams on Wednesday, July 21.
Every preexisting team needs to submit their protection lists on Saturday, with the exception of the Vegas Golden Knights, because they didn’t share in the $650 million expansion fee Seattle paid to enter the league.
Teams have the option of protecting seven forwards, three defencemen, and one goaltender, or eight skaters (regardless of position) and a goalie. First- and second-year pro players, as well as unsigned draft picks, are exempt from the process.
As for the Kraken, they are required to pick a minimum of 14 forwards, nine defencemen, and three goalies. At least 20 players picked must be already under contract for next season, with their cap hits valuing between 60-100% of the salary cap.

The Detroit Red Wings have acquired veteran defenseman Nick Leddy, who could serve both as a partner for Moritz Seider and a trade chip at next season's deadline. But the deal may also cost the Wings a young defenseman in the expansion draft.
In exchange for Leddy, the Wings sent forward Richard Panik and the No. 52 pick in the 2021 draft to the New York Islanders. Panik was a throw-in in April’s Anthony Mantha-Jakub Vrana trade-deadline deal, and the pick was one general manager Steve Yzerman acquired at the 2020 deadline in the Andreas Athanasiou deal with the Edmonton Oilers. Panik had a goal and three assists in 12 games with the Wings, who retained 50% of his salary. Panik is signed through 2022-23.

With the expansion draft looming, Steve Yzerman attempted to take advantage of the Islanders, who were not going to protect defenseman Nick Leddy.
In exchange for Leddy, Detroit sends New York the 52nd overall pick in the 2021 draft, as well as Richard Panik. Detroit retains 50% salary on Panik for the remainder of his 2 year contract (1.375M per season).
At first I liked this deal, but I think I had an inflated view of Leddy from past seasons.

The New York Islanders traded defenseman Nick Leddy to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday for forward Richard Panik and a second-round pick in this year's draft.
The Islanders were unlikely to protect Leddy in the upcoming NHL Expansion draft.
Leddy, 30, tallied 31 points (two goals, 29 assists) in 56 games this past season and had another six assists in 19 Stanley Cup Ppayoff games. He has one year remaining on the seven-year, $38.5 million deal he signed in 2015.
Leddy has 65 career goals in 11 seasons with the Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks (2010-14).

Vladimir Tarasenko wants out of St. Louis and the Blues are happy to accommodate his request. The 29 year-old has two years left on a deal that comes with a $7.5 million AAV and the ability to control his fate. Thanks to his contract which includes a 10 team trade list protection.
