Bishop Wall on politicians and Communion: 'Our concern is not political but pastoral' – Catholic World Report

Gallup, N.M., May 19, 2021 / 14:53 pm (CNA).
Bishop James Wall of Gallup responded Tuesday to a recent essay from Bishop Robert McElroy, in which the Bishop of San Diego opined that in discussions about whether  pro-abortion Catholic politicians should be admitted to Communion, the sacrament is being “weaponized for political ends.”
Bishop Wall said that it is a pastoral, rather than political, question.
“While I don’t presume to know what’s in the mind and heart of my brother bishops, I am not motivated by political ends, nor are those with whom I have discussed the subject. Our concern is not political but pastoral; it is for the salvation of souls. This issue has political ramifications, but that is not an excuse to shy away at this crucial moment,” Wall wrote in a May 18 essay in ....

Phoenix bishop defends speaking out on Communion: 'The care of souls is our first concern' – Catholic World Report

Washington D.C., May 14, 2021 / 14:00 pm America/Denver (CNA).
The Bishop of Phoenix said on Thursday that he is protecting the Eucharist, not “politicizing” it, by teaching that Catholic politicians cannot support abortion and receive Communion.
In an interview by EWTN Pro-Life Weekly that aired on Thursday, Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix was asked to respond to claims that speaking out about pro-abortion Catholic politicians was “politicizing” the Eucharist.
“That’s not my intention at all. The Eucharist is the great treasure of the Church. And if it’s not being respected – if people don’t appreciate what this great treasure is – we need to help them understand that,” Bishop Olmsted told EWTN Pro-Life Weekly. ....

CDF highlights its Note on Catholics in politics in letter to US bishops on Eucharistic coherence

Denver Newsroom, May 10, 2021 / 15:16 pm (CNA).
The prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith wrote Friday to the head of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops regarding admission to Communion, affirming the centrality of the congregation’s 2002 note on Catholic’s participation in politics and the importance of safeguarding the rights of ordinaries in their local Churches.
A 2004 memo from Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, then the prefect of the same congregation, should “be discussed only within the context of the authoritative Doctrinal Note,” read the May 7 letter by Luis Cardinal Ladaria to Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, which was obtained by CNA. ....

USCCB has 'nothing in the works' on Biden and Communion – Catholic World Report

CNA Staff, Apr 29, 2021 / 13:58 pm (CNA).
Recent reports that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops may at their spring general assembly press pro-abortion Catholic politicians not to receive Communion are unfounded, and at best ignorant of ecclesial structure, a source close to the conference has told CNA.
A source close to the USCCB told CNA April 29 that they believe such reports from the AP and the Washington Post are either “just totally ignorant of the Church’s structure,” or meant “to pressure the bishops into silence” regarding the Equality Act.
The Equality Act would amend federal civil rights law and create protected classes for sexual orientation and gender identity, extending those protections to all areas where race is currently protected. ....

Library : Statement on the Reception of Holy Communion by Those Who Persist in Public Grave Sin

Description
Cardinal Burke presents a clear, concise statement on the reception of Holy Communion by those who persist in public grave sin.
Publisher & Date
Cardinal Raymond Burke, April 7, 2021
Many Catholics and also non-Catholics who, while they do not embrace the Catholic faith, respect the Catholic Church for her teaching regarding faith and morals, have asked me how it is possible for Catholics to receive Holy Communion, while at the same time they publicly and obstinately promote programs, policies and legislation in direct violation of the moral law. In particular, they ask how Catholic politicians and civil officials who publicly and obstinately defend and promote the practice of abortion on demand can approach to receive Holy Communion. Their question clearly applies as well to those Catholics who publicly promote policies and laws in violation of the dignity of human life of those burdened by serious illness, special needs or advanced years, and in viola ....
