Space exploration and wines have nothing in common, but there is one bottle that dared to go where no other bottle has been. Space, the final frontier for wine.

Bordeaux 2018 revisited: Saint-Emilion - The Drinks Business

Bordeaux 2018 revisited: Saint-Emilion

Colin Hay
In the first of a series of appellation profiles to be published over the next few months, our Bordeaux correspondent,
Colin Hay, revisits the 2018 vintage in Saint-Emilion, providing an overview of the appellation in this challenging, heterogeneous yet potentially excellent vintage, and detailed tasting notes on 179 wines. His Pomerol profile will follow shortly, with articles on each of the leading appellations of the Médoc and Pessac-Léognan to be published later in the year.
My overview of the 2018 vintage – enthusiastically drafted, as I recall, on the train back from Bordeaux after

Getting Back My Nose After a COVID Knockout

Getting Back My Nose After a COVID KO
Like countless others, I’m struggling with the loss of my sense of smell. Can simple exercises help?
Some aromas have come back already for Robert Camuto, such as a violet sachet he uses for scent training, but he still struggles to pick up things like cut lemon and red pepper flakes.

As my nose recovers from a knockout bout with COVID-19, I have been keeping a smell journal—a scorecard of what I can sniff out and what I still can’t.
I completely lost my sense of smell for 14 days beginning Dec. 19. Recovering it has been slow and weirdly random. I’d guess I’m now at only 20 percent of normal.

Twelve bottles of wine went to space – now it's almost time to taste them

Chris Davies - Jan 15, 2021, 12:04pm CST
Twelve bottles of wine that boldly went where no Bordeaux has gone before have returned from the International Space Station, with a tasting planned to see just how near-zero-gravity might have impacted them. The unusual cargo – along with 320 vine canes from the French region – was aboard SpaceX’s Dragon when it splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean this week, having returned from the orbiting research platform.
It wasn’t, unfortunately for the astronauts stationed there, a treat for when they were off-duty. Instead, the wine’s stay was organized by Space Cargo Unlimited, a company aiming to explore how space can coexist with, and potential improve on, sustainable agriculture.

French wines return from space to inform research

Bottles of French wine have returned to Earth following a stint on the International Space Station: with researchers now ready to assess how the wine has changed.
Over the last year, 12 bottles have been circling the earth on the station; while 12 bottles on Earth have been kept by for comparison. 320 vine canes were also in the consignment. The wines and vines returned to Earth on Wednesday on SpaceX’s Cargo Dragon spacecraft.
The aim of the exercise is to fuel research into agriculture of the future, as scientists search for varieties that are hardier, resistant to pests, or able to cope with climate change. The wines will also be tasted to see how they have changed compared to those on Earth.

The wine and vine material stored on the spacecraft left the International Space Station on 12 January and is expected to splash down west of Tampa off the Florida coast at about 8:27pm local time.
Space Cargo Unlimited (SCU), the company behind the project, intends to open some of the bottles in February during a private event, after which months of chemical testing will take place.
