Two years ago, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman promised to return over 2,000 Pakistanis imprisoned in Saudi jails back to their homeland. This promise, however, remains yet to be fulfilled, said human rights organisations in a joint statement on Wednesday.
The foreign ministry submitted a list in the Lahore High Court in December 2019 which showed that less than 5% of those who had returned had come back after February 2019. The number of Pakistani still imprisoned in Saudi jails is nearly 2,500. ....

Pakistan province first to launch jail vaccine drive


KARACHI: The provincial government of Sindh in southern Pakistan has launched a vaccination drive to inoculate prisoners aged 50 and above as part of a campaign that rights groups hope other provinces will follow.
In Karachi Central Jail, where the drive was launched by Kazi Nazir Ahmed, inspector-general of prisons, on Wednesday, after almost a quarter of the jail population had tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) last June. The jail, with a capacity of 2,400 prisoners, currently houses 5,000 inmates.
“COVID-19 is the biggest disaster that man is facing now. We are proud of the government of Sindh, which has taken effective and timely measures,” Ahmed told Arab News, adding that the prison department was the first in the country to begin vaccinating inmates and jail staff. ....

While death penalty is still used in wide number of crimes, the number of sentences awarded has been falling steadily
ISLAMABAD:
Although Pakistan s justice system is facing severe criticism due to its failure to redress people’s grievances, international rights organisations have acknowledged the Supreme Court’s efforts to minimise the scope of death penalty for last one decade.
A study conducted by the Justice Project Pakistan revealed that Supreme Court of Pakistan set aside the death penalty in 78 per cent of cases between 2010 and 2018. On an even more uplifting note, 97 per cent of sentences were either commuted to life imprisonment or decided otherwise in 2018. ....
