An expensive IVF technique, routinely offered in fertility clinics around the world, offers no extra benefits to standard IVF in the vast majority of cases, our new research shows.
The technique, known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI, was developed to help couples where the man has a low sperm count. But it is now the main fertilisation method clinics use in Australia and New Zealand, even when sperm counts are normal. ....

Researchers paint portrait of Marie Curie in semiconductor

University of Amsterdam
Amsterdam researchers have developed a novel technique for spatially controlled patterning of semiconductors with tuneable optoelectronic properties. As a proof of principle, Lukas Helmbrecht and Wim Noorduin ‘painted’ a portrait of Marie Curie in a perovskite semiconductor layer. Both researchers work at the AMOLF research institute at Amsterdam Science Park. Wim Noorduin is professor of Self-Organising Matter at the University of Amsterdam’s Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences. Lukas Helmbrecht obtained his PhD at UvA under Noorduin’s supervision. The results of their research are published this week in the journal ‘Advanced Materials’.
In the paper, Helmbrecht and Noorduin present their novel ion-exchange lithography technique that takes on the fundamental challenge of patterning semiconductor materials with different properties in a single film. This patterning is essential for the development of next‐generation (opto)el ....

Technique allows mapping of epigenetic information in single cells at scale

Technique allows mapping of epigenetic information in single cells at scale
Decoding epigenomic information from individual cells from the mouse brain. Histones are attached to DNA as beads on a string, with different versions decorating the genome as “epigenetic stickers”, labelling which genes are turned on or off. The method single-cell CUT&Tag allows to examine tens of thousands of single cells at the same time to determine their histone profiles. Illustration by Amagoia Agirre.
Histones are tiny proteins that bind to DNA and hold information that can help turn on or off individual genes. Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have developed a technique that makes it possible to examine how different versions of histones bind to the genome in tens of thousands of individual cells simultanously. The technique was applied to the mouse brain and can be used to study epigenetics at a single-cell level in other complex tissues. The study is published in Natu ....
