Researchers call for trials of rapamycin to treat COVID-19

Researchers call for trials of rapamycin to treat COVID-19
Researchers in the United States, China, and the UK have called for immediate large-scale clinical trials of an antibiotic called rapamycin as a prophylactic and treatment approach to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in older individuals.
Matt Kaeberlein from the University of Washington in Seattle and colleagues say that preclinical and clinical evidence already suggests that rapamycin and its derivatives (rapalogs) may delay or reverse the age-related decline in immune function that makes older individuals more susceptible to severe complications and death due to disease.
These drugs are inhibitors of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) protein that regulates the aging of eukaryotes. Inhibition of mTOR has already been shown to delay or reverse many age-related phenotypes, including declines in immune function. ....

Decision-support tool may help clinicians to appropriately treat children with diarrhea

Decision-support tool may help clinicians to appropriately treat children with diarrhea
A decision-support tool that could be accessed via mobile devices may help clinicians in lower-resource settings avoid unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions for children with diarrhea, a study published today in
eLife shows.
The preliminary findings suggest that incorporating real-time environmental, epidemiologic, and clinical data into an easy-to-access, electronic tool could help clinicians appropriately treat children with diarrhea even when testing is not available. This could help avoid the overuse of antibiotics, which contributes to the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria.
Diarrhea is a common condition among children in low-resource settings. Antibiotics are often prescribed for it, despite the fact these medications will not help patients who have diarrhea caused by viruses. Helping clinicians determine if a case of diarrhea is likely caused by a virus or bacteria cou ....

Neonatal antibiotic treatment associated with reduced weight and height in boys

Neonatal antibiotic treatment associated with reduced weight and height in boys
Exposure to antibiotics in the first days of life is thought to affect various physiological aspects of neonatal development. A new study conducted in Turku, Finland, reveals that antibiotic treatment within 14 days of birth is associated with reduced weight and height in boys, but not girls, up to the age of six.
By contrast, the study showed significantly higher body mass index (BMI) in both boys and girls following antibiotic use after the neonatal period, and within the first six years of life.
The findings, published in the journal ....
