New Delhi: More government hospital beds will be freed for Covid-19 patients, India’s health ministry said Sunday, as the vast nation grappled with a worsening virus crisis and states appealed for additional supplies of oxygen and treatment drugs.
The country of 1.3 billion people added a record-high of 261,500 new cases on Sunday, with one-in-six people who underwent tests returning positive coronavirus results, the ministry said.
India is the world’s second most-infected nation with almost 14.8 million cases. Hospitals usually reserved for employees of ministries or public sector companies should convert some of their wards into Covid-19 facilities equipped with ICU and oxygen-supported beds, ventilators, laboratories and healthcare staff, the government said. ....

Seizures of the deadly drug fentanyl increased by about 233 percent between March 2021 and last year as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials say the 652 pounds seized at the southwest border last month is part of a concerted increase in drug smuggling operations.
Data released by CBP Friday revealed that border agents have seized 2,098 pounds of fentanyl, compared with 639 pounds uncovered along the southwest border during the same period last year. The number of seizure events is nearly identical to one year ago, but public health officials continue to warn that drug overdose deaths likely exceeded more than 90,000 in 2020 and are on track to worsen in 2021. GOP lawmakers in Washington have pounced on the fentanyl seizure increase as the fault of President Joe Biden s inability to control the border surge of migrants. ....

PESHAWAR: Though expected for some time, the resignation of two advisors and one special assistant to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday created a crisis-like situation in the government as well as in the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) circles.
There were speculations that after seeking approval from Prime Minister Imran Khan, the chief minister would sack some of his cabinet members and change portfolios of a few other ministers.
It was quite a lengthy list of ministers, advisors and special assistants supposed to be either de-notified or have their portfolios changed, but some of them are believed to have survived the so-called ‘clean-up’ operation. ....
