The Next Generation Science Standards Are a Failure

Education
The following, an edited transcript of the author’s remarks at a National Association of Scholars webinar, is used with permission.
I am going to play the role of the radical skeptic. My position is that the Next Generation Science Standards, adopted by many states to tell their K-12 teachers how to teach science, is just the latest example of our failure to do the impossible. We should not engage with the NGSS or attempt to improve them; we should instead dismiss them out of hand and expose the flawed premises that led to their creation.
I’ll begin with an analogy. A few years back, I went on one of those State Department-approved tours to Havana, Cuba. We were there to look at architecture. At the time, the Cuban regime had just begun letting private citizens open their own restaurants a bold step for a socialist country. We went to a few of these places, and they weren’t bad. But each proprietor had to submit his menu to the government for approval. ....

SPOKANE, Wash. Many middle schoolers broaden their horizons by trying new activities and experimenting with unique opportunities. It’s a great age to discover, but not all students have the same opportunities, especially if they may learn in a unique way or have different abilities. One local teacher is expanding the STEM curriculum to better serve students.
“We are inclusive. These are all our students,” said Danelle Elder, a Project Lead the Way teacher at Chase Middle School. “These are all our kids and so they get the curriculum.”
She teaches career, technology and engineering classes right across the hallway from the direct instruction students and wanted those students to have the same opportunities to learn. She’s created a curriculum with tiny robots, called Ozobots, which teach students science, technology, coding and engineering skills. Her medical detective students were sh ....

Science Betrayed
The propaganda infecting K–12 science curricula, especially on the environment, won’t go away.
Education
It is a sad irony that the teaching of science in American schools is so unscientific. In a more rational world, children would learn about nature and a mode of inquiry the scientific method that would awaken them to the awe, fascination, and surprise that the universe should inspire. Instead, the chronic problems afflicting K–12 education and the growing politicization of science have pushed us ever further from that ideal.
Science has been misused and poorly taught for centuries. Aristocrats in the United Kingdom espoused eugenics, Soviet Communists embraced Lysenkoism, and theists around the world credit the theory of Intelligent Design. The most enduring betrayal of science in the classroom today is biased teaching about the environment. Whereas eugenics was fueled by fear among the rich that the ....
