BOSTON (AP) – Massachusetts is tightening up access to jobless benefits as it emerges more fully from the pandemic. The Baker administration announced Thursday that work search requirements will be reinstated for all those seeking regular unemployment insurance benefits beginning the week of June 15. The requirement applies to those receiving Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation and those on extended benefits. Massachusetts suspended work-search requirements in March 2020, following updated federal guidance at the outset of the pandemic. The change comes after Gov. Charlie Baker announced the state will lift COVID-19 restrictions on May 29 and end the COVID-19 state of emergency June 15.

About thirty people joined a march along Washington Street in Codman Square last Thursday to push for state lawmakers to adopt a bill intended to halt no-fault evictions in the wake of the Covid pandemic.
The event— organized by City Life/Vida Urbana and held despite a heavy rain— highlighted the group’s success in assisting two Dorchester people— Jean Gaspard and Stephania Pierre-Noel— who were facing imminent evictions earlier this year to stay in their homes.

Brockton evictions: City Life Vida Urbana says moratorium ends in June

BROCKTON — October was the last month in which evictions and eviction notices were banned as a result of the pandemic thanks to a state law that extended the eviction ban from July 2020 to October 2020.
Since Gov. Charlie Baker let Massachusetts' eviction moratorium expire last October, landlords have filed over 265 eviction cases in Brockton, according to Helen Matthews, spokesperson for City Life/Vida Urbana. The data on evictions was retrieved through the Massachusetts Trial Courts.
Although the Massachusetts evictions moratorium expired in October 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention instituted a federal moratorium effective through June 30, 2021, although that protection only applies to households who meet certain income and vulnerability criteria, according to Mass.gov.
