The shared experience of the COVID pandemic, now in its second year, has at times shown the potential to defuse the toxic polarization that divides our nation. The indiscriminate harm that the airborne COVID virus inflicted on millions of people and families did, at times, bring us back to the basics of protecting our communities, of looking out for each other, and working together to guard public health.

Although some of that consensus has eroded in the face of “mask wars” and vaccination conspiracies, at least one unifying tenet still stands: that our nation’s health care workers deserve our universal thanks and respect for putting their lives and health at risk, directly treating and caring for millions of patients suffering from COVID-19’s deadly grasp. ....

Labor unions have staged protests, gone on strike and even organized new members throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. National Nurses United is no exception as the country s largest nurses union with 170,000 members across the country, NNU notched two major election wins in the past year.
About 2,000 registered nurses at Maine Medical Center voted to join NNU in April, making it the largest successful union election with the National Labor Relations Board so far in 2021. And in September, 2,000 nurses at HCA s Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, successfully unionized in a state with the second-lowest union membership rate in the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. ....
