A 62-year-old adventure mystery that has prompted conspiracy theories around Soviet military experiments, Yetis, and even extraterrestrial contact may have its best, most sensible explanation yet one found in a series of avalanche simulations based in part on car crash experiments and animation used in the movie
Frozen.
In an article published today in the journal
Communications Earth and Environment, researchers present data pointing to the likelihood that a bizarrely small, delayed avalanche may have been responsible for the gruesome injuries and deaths of nine experienced hikers who never returned from a planned 200-mile adventure in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the winter of ....

Sister André, born Lucile Randon, showed no symptoms of the COVID-19 virus when she tested positive on January 16, with other Sainte Catherine Labouré nursing home residents in Toulon, France. Of the 88 residents in the facility, 10 of the 81 infected passed away.
The French nun appears to have her priorities straight. Upon speaking with her doctor, she was reportedly only concerned about the other residents and whether her meal and bedtime schedules would change. André was quarantined to her room until nursing home staff members were confident that she was no longer contagious. ....

In 1959, nine hikers died in the Ural Mountains in Russia, leaving a mystery behind as to what killed them. Now, 62 years later, scientists say they know what brought those young hikers’ lives to an end: a slab avalanche. And they say they’re certain of this, in part, thanks to simulations generated by the code used to animate Disney’s blockbuster movie
Movie Web reported on the newly announced scientific explanation for the event, known as the Dyatlov Pass Incident. Johan Gaume, the head of the Snow Avalanche Simulation Laboratory at the Swiss technical institute, EPFL, led the team that’s come up with the novel explanation; one they’ve recently outlined in a study published in the journal, ....
