Trump administration officials defend their response to US Capitol riot

Two senior Trump administration officials defended their actions during the January 6 riot at the US Capitol in testimony before Congress on Wednesday (local time), with former acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller standing behind every decision he made that day.
Miller told the House Oversight Committee that he was concerned before the insurrection that sending troops to the building could fan fears of a military coup and cause a repeat of the deadly Kent State shootings.
His testimony, in the latest in a series of congressional hearings centered on the riot, is aimed at rebutting broad criticism that military forces were too slow to arrive even as pro-Trump rioters violently breached the building and stormed inside. The panel s chairwoman, Representative Carolyn Maloney, made clear at the outset of the hearing that she planned to dive into the hours-long gap between when military support was first requested and when it was received. ....

Paul Gosar Describes Ashli Babbitt s Death as An Execution During Congressional Hearing
On 5/12/21 at 2:38 PM EDT
Associated Press reported.
Representative Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) described Ashli Babbitt, the California woman who was fatally shot by an officer during the insurrection after climbing through a broken part of a door, as having been executed.
Prosecutors have said the officer who shot her will not be prosecuted.
Representative Jody Hice (R-Ga.) said that it was Trump supporters who lost their lives that day, not Trump supporters who were taking the lives of others.
Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who was injured during the riot, suffered a stroke and was later determined to have died of natural causes. Two other insurrectionists died of natural causes and one died of an amphetamine intoxication, a D.C medical examiner ruled. Dozens of other officers and rioters were injured that day. ....

There were calls for unity and predictions of division among Kentucky’s congressional members as Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States.
Kentucky’s Republican senior Sen. Mitch McConnell took part in one of the official festivities presenting a flag that flew over the inaugural ceremony to new Vice President Kamala Harris.
“The star-spangled banner is the greatest symbol of the endurance of the American idea. It flies over this building on triumphant days and tragic ones. For all factions and all parties,” McConnell said during the ritual.
First elected in 1984, McConnell served in the Senate with both Biden and Harris. ....

WASHINGTON (CN) Following repeated refusals to hand over critical documents that could illuminate errors in the 2020 U.S. census, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross was subpoenaed Thursday by House lawmakers.
“Your approach to Congress’ oversight responsibilities has been abominable,” Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, a New York Democrat who chairs the House Oversight Committee, wrote in a Thursday letter to Ross. “You have repeatedly withheld documents that should have been produced as a matter of course to your Department’s oversight committee. You have withheld them not only from Congress, but from the independent Government Accountability Office and, according to Census Bureau officials, the federal Judiciary as well.” ....
