Here's why some people are sceptical about Covid-19 vaccines

Emily Mohapi, 99, was one of the first people from the area to receive a vaccine. She was initially afraid but put on a brave face and was accompanied by Xezwi.
“I was scared because people used to say you die if you get vaccinated. I am now telling others that they said you die but I am still alive. I am thankful that he took me to the vaccination site,” she said.
Mohapi said she felt no pain while being vaccinated.
Xezwi said having registered for the vaccination, Mohapi did not get a confirmation SMS to go and get the jab and that was a problem that others faced. “The system on its own is troubling,” he said.

Protest and reflection: A year after the death of George Floyd

Bettye and Robert Freeman were sitting in their Boston living room when they heard the clamor on the street outside.
After 51 years of marriage, they walked out to their stoop without saying a word. They just went.
As they pushed through the heavy wooden front door, they saw the chanting protesters. It was June 4, 2020, 10 days after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.

Show us the vaccines - and make sure they're kept safe from the looters

25 April 2021 - 00:00
If truth be told, few - if any - believed that the government would deliver on its stated vaccine promises. South Africans have learnt from bitter experience not to take their government at its word. It either lies to hide its incompetence or simply moves the goalposts. To preserve our sanity, we often have to take what it says with a dollop of salt.
It is a reflection of that lack of confidence in the government that some are already speculating that the much-vaunted vaccine rollout, which has been beckoning from a distance like a mirage, may not see the light of day. On hearing such evil rumours, the government will probably denounce them with the intensity of a convert. But the only way to deal with peddlers of doom is to confront them with facts...

The never-ending task of the shepherd: Sunday reflection

Jesus said:
“I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.”

De Leon: A reflection on 'the community pantry'

WITH the emergence of the community pantries in most areas today in Metro Manila and even here in our hometown that was inspired by the Maginhawa Community Pantry, first installed a few days ago, made me pause and reflect.
“This is what our Lord truly wants.” I told my family over dinner. This pandemic’s teachings should be taken seriously and unless we learn from this, Covid-19 will be here to stay. It will rot us in hell. And did you ever realize that the very first “community pantry” was made by Jesus in His time?
The feeding of the 5,000 people is also known as the "Miracle of the five loaves and two fishes.” The Gospel of John states that Jesus used five loaves and two fishes supplied by a boy to feed a multitude.

Cortez: Easter Reflection

SunStar
April 03, 2021
THE HOLY Week story does not end with Jesus’ crucifixion on Good Friday. Yes, he was a victim of the most unjust trial ever – an innocent man condemned to die a criminal’s death; a sinless person entrusted to the hands of sinful men. He was scourged at the pillar, crowned with thorns, humiliated and terribly tortured, so much so that Isaiah 52:14 described him as the suffering servant whose “appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being.” He carried his heavy cross and upon reaching Golgotha (Calvary), was nailed onto it, dying a truly excruciating death. Then his body was buried by Joseph of Arimathea, assisted by Nicodemus and some of the women who followed him from Galilee.
