Alabama officials are not the only ones opposing or raising concerns about Amtrak’s return to the Gulf Coast.
The Port of New Orleans and railroad associations in Mississippi and Louisiana, in separate letters filed to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board, are urging federal authorities to require Amtrak to complete a Rail Traffic Control (RTC) study before resuming service between Mobile and New Orleans. Amtrak wants to restart the service by New Year’s Day with a twice-daily service connecting the two cities with four stops in Mississippi – Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis. ....

When the pandemic forced a shutdown of America’s ocean-going cruise industry, New Orleans lost an important component of its tourism economy.
Since mid-March 2020, the Port of New Orleans has lost 338 individual “ship calls” that would have carried an estimated 1.5 million cruise passengers. It missed out on approximately $21 million in revenue from per-person cruise fees and parking fees. And the Greater New Orleans economy has forfeited $250 million in overall economic impact. ....

Barbara Melvin, the South Carolina Ports Authority’s chief operating officer, has been named the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance’s 2021 Woman of the Year.
Melvin is one of the few female port COOs. She manages such critical infrastructure projects as the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal, set to open this month, as well as the deepening of Charleston Harbor to 52 feet.  ....
