Mission begins to restore the Gold Star Mothers Garden in Landis Park

VINELAND – Just off Veterans Circle within Landis Park stands the few remnants of a community’s vow to never forget.
A neglected concrete pool and an iron gate, flanked by eroding brick pillars, are relics of the once sacred Mothers’ Garden of Remembrance.
The landscaped tribute was constructed as a companion to the Heroes Memorial Circle, where the community gathers for Memorial and Veterans Day observances.
The memorial circle pays tribute to Vineland’s sons who gave their lives in the name of freedom.
The remembrance garden dedicated 100 years ago honored the sacrifice of their mothers.   ....

MUSCATATUCK, Ind. – Just under 200 New York Army National Guard Soldiers from the 101st Expeditionary Signal Battalion and 204th Engineer Battalion were among the 4,200 troops taking part an exercise testing their ability to respond to a nuclear attack.
The annual Guardian Response took place from April 19 to 20 at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Indiana. The training center is a former psychiatric center converted to represent a typical urban area.
The 101st Signal Battalion sent 138 troops of Bravo Company to Muscatatuck, while 59 Soldiers from the Headquarters Company of the 204th Engineers took part in the exercise.
The annual exercise involves Army National Guard, Army Reserve and active Army forces all working together to respond to a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear attack or accident, known as a CBRN incident. ....

STEUBENVILLE Col. Yvonne L. Mays, a native of Steubenville, serves as director of staff, New Jersey Air National Guard in Lakehurst, N.J., a position she has held since December 2017.
The Steubenville High School graduate and daughter of Freddie and Frankie Allen of Steubenville is the principal adviser to the adjutant general of the state of New Jersey on all matters concerning the 108th Air Refueling Wing, the 177th Fighter Wing, subordinate units and civilian matters pertaining to the New Jersey National Guard.
She is directly responsible for the New Jersey Air National Guards’ efficient and prompt delivery of support services to the two wings. Mays is the principal assistant to TAG, NJANG/CC and joint staff regarding execution of ANG and AF policies and programs. She formulates and coordinates policy affecting more than 2,200 Airmen and their families. ....

Two National Guardsmen are the 18th and 19th members of the military to die of COVID-19 complications, spokespeople confirmed to Military Times on Thursday.
California Army National Guardsman Sgt. Goran Dimovski, 40, died Jan. 31, spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Shiroma told Military Times. Alabama Air National Guardsman Master Sgt. Darryl Lovell, 58, died Jan. 28, spokeswoman Maj. Jacqueline Witt said.
“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the family,” she added. ....

On Friday, the National Guard Bureau announced it had increased the number of troops authorized to deploy to Washington D.C., to 25,000 to support President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

The National Guard Bureau confirmed the new authorization in a Friday press statement. The increase comes only one day after the bureau increased the authorization to 21,000 troops on Thursday, up from 15,000 on Monday.
