AG, APD to target 'organized retail crime' » Albuquerque Journal

Balderas’ office did not provide statistics on how much merchandise has been reported stolen.
A Journal news report in May quoted local police as saying shoplifters have become more brazen in recent years and are more likely to be armed or violent.
In terms of “organized retail crime,” Balderas said his office has convicted pawn shop employees who were directing people to steal items so they could sell them at the store. He also cited the case of a business owner who had rented out a piece of equipment only to learn it was being sold to a third party at a much lower cost. ....

Inmates awaiting 'expedited' pandemic hearing

SANTA FE – Despite approving an expedited briefing schedule, the New Mexico Supreme Court has yet to schedule oral arguments in a case alleging inmates faced cruel and unusual confinement conditions during the pandemic.
That has attorneys for the inmate plaintiffs concerned.
The time-sensitive case – spearheaded by the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico, the New Mexico Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and others on behalf of incarcerated people statewide – was expedited to the Supreme Court by the New Mexico Court of Appeals in November, just as the pandemic was peaking in New Mexico.

Lalita Moskowitz, staff attorney with the ACLU, said plaintiff attorneys were expecting the arguments to be scheduled shortly after the last briefing in the case in February. ....

Officer claims New Mexico State Police uses quota system

Created: May 02, 2021 08:56 PM
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Is there a quota system being used by New Mexico State Police (NMSP)? State Police Officer Tony Fetty thinks so. However, NMSP Chief Robert Thornton firmly disagrees.
“Officers in our district, and around the state, they’re being targeted with a quota system for arrests and citations,” Officer Fetty said. “And it’s wrong.”
Officer Fetty says NMSP leadership isn’t being transparent, even to officers, about the specific number of citations each officer needs to hit every month, but said they’re being disciplined if they don’t write enough of them.
Emails provided to KOB 4 by Fetty show that his superior had threatened to discipline Fetty if he didn’t write more citations.  ....
