'You'll be whooping from your sofa!' 25 hilarious standup sets to make everything better | Comedy

Baby Cobra gives the lie to the claim that comedians are no longer edgy or that standup as social commentary is being watered down by wet-flannel millennials. Wong knows her material on race and sex will make people uncomfortable; she revels in it. And it works because she’s never punching down. An Asian-American woman, she is highly literate in social dynamics and the dark humour they give rise to. Rude, whip-smart standup for those who don’t want their comedy cosy.

March 3, 2021
Updated at 12:00 p.m. ET on March 3, 2021.
Cable-news shows treated Andrew Cuomo like a living legend this summer, thanks to his supposedly superlative handling of the coronavirus pandemic, yet his past few weeks really have been the stuff of myth.
But which myth? Is he Icarus, flying too close to the sun in his premature attempt to claim credit for New York’s public-health prowess, only to have his wings melted by the heat of scandal? Is he Oedipus, brought low by his determination to eclipse his father? Or is he simply Zeus, a powerful man prone to wrathful outbursts and sexual misconduct? ....

Jackie Raynal, the French director, editor, and former programmer of New York’s Bleecker Street and Carnegie Hall cinemas, first became involved in film when, riding through Paris on a Vespa in 1958 at the age of eighteen, she was stopped and asked to be an extra in Otto Preminger’s Bonjour Tristesse.
Six years later, she was the youngest head editor in France. She later became a key member of the storied Zanzibar Group, whose films anticipated and then mourned the events of May 1968. Deux Fois
, Raynal’s stark, elegant 1968 directorial debut, is made under its sign. This work, and her later New York films, are streaming at Metrograph through February 17; New York Story ....
