The Presidency and New Orleans - My New Orleans

My New Orleans

Joe Biden once spoke at UNO. I know because I was there. As I recall he spoke in the University Center’s auditorium. The room was maybe half full, which was not bad considering that all that Biden was at the time was the Junior Senator from Delaware. Still, he was young, handsome, moderate and perceived as a rising star. The event was sponsored by the university’s Young Democrats. I am not sure what he spoke about that day – the thoughts of junior senators from Delaware did not matter that much. What counted was his presence. Yet, besides his celebrity status there was also sadness to his story. In 1972 he had lost his wife and daughter in a car accident. Biden personified tragedy and triumph. It was the possibility of more triumph that drew the curious crowd there that afternoon. Some even thought that maybe one day he would be President. ....

New Orleans celebrates Christmas pretty much like any other American city, but it is in the nature of this city to never be totally normal; to be a bit quirky in whatever we do, and that includes the holidays.  Here are three ways that we go dashing through the glow a little differently:

The fasting was especially challenge for the midnight service not only because of the lateness of the hour but also because the masses, with their caroling, preaching, incense burning and long communion lines. By the time the church-goers went home they were craving food. The classic Réveillon, back then, was a hearty meal including meats, gri ....

Bonfires on the Levee – The True Story - My New Orleans

My New Orleans
12/14/2020

Because of COVID, Papa Noel will be on his own this Christmas Eve as he approaches Louisiana’s river parishes. We all know that the reason folks in St. James, and other river parishes, build bonfires on the night before Christmas goes back to an old tradition of Cajun kids creating the pyres so that Papa Noel can find his way to their neighborhood. (In recent years, Noel’s task has gotten a bit more difficult as the fires’ glow has been overcome by the light from the chemical refineries.)
Still, the legend persists. It is a nice story with just the one drawback… it is not true. Not the part about Papa Noel coming to Louisiana, but the part about the Cajun kids and their pyromania. ....
