The ongoing national conversation about racial injustice introduced many Americans to a holiday then not well known in the mainstream — Juneteenth, celebrating June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas finally learned they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier, on Jan. 1, 1863.
But we couldn’t do much with this knowledge in 2020. The pandemic made public celebrations a no-go, so most Juneteenth 2020 events were muted and, for safety’s sake, virtual.
What a difference a year — and mass vaccinations — can make.
This year, Angelenos have a long list of diverse, real-life events to choose from, from remembrances of an early civil rights activist to community parades and rallies to celebrations involving music, food and drink.

History would tell, from the 1880s Black as Black families migrated from the South escaping blatant racism and then Jim Crow, many chose California due to the climate, advertisements regarding employment, healthcare, and overall beautiful life. Many of these Black families landed in Santa Monica beach neighborhoods, including Belmar Park, in clusters, being some of the first to settle in a beach neighborhood.

Santa Monica unveiled the city’s newest sculpture this week ahead of Sunday’s grand opening celebration of Historic Belmar Park.
Residents driving down 4th Street towards Pico Avenue Tuesday afternoon caught a clear glimpse of “A Resurrection in Four Stanzas,” an outdoor exhibition created by artist April Banks that seeks to illustrate the stories and dreams of the Santa Monicans who were displaced from the city.
Banks’ sculpture imitates the architectural style of a shotgun house, which was a prominent structure in the Belmar community that thrived in the first half of the 20th century before the City of Santa Monica took control through eminent domain in the 1950s to build the Civic Center.
