BaylorProud » 7 things to see and do in Waco (that you probably haven't seen/done yet)

Maybe you’re looking for a nice day trip from your home in DFW, Houston, Austin or San Antonio. Maybe it’s a stop on a longer summer vacation drive across Texas. Maybe it’s your (or your child’s) Orientation or Line Camp that brings you this way.
Whatever your reason for visiting Waco this summer, there’s plenty to see and do. A quick Google search reveals the classic favorites — the Baylor campus, Cameron Park (and Cameron Park Zoo), the Dr Pepper Museum, the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame & Museum, etc. — so we’re going to do a little bit deeper dive.

BaylorProud » Grant to support Baylor prof's study of American culture's impact on racial attitudes & myths

June 3, 2021 // Posted In Academics, Research
Dr. Greg Garrett is particularly gifted at telling all types of stories. As a specialist in creative writing, he’s told stories of truth and passion. He’s analyzed media for its effects on past and modern societies. And over the past year, he has been focused on telling stories of race and justice.
His most recent book,
“Racial mythologies have been deeply embedded in American life, from film to legal codes to theology to popular and material culture,” says Garrett. “Racial mythologies about the inferiority of other races are untrue in the way we usually think of myths as lies, but they’re also powerfully true in the way that people have oriented their lives around them and used them to make sense of the world. I’m interested in the way these dynamics shapes the way we understand our lives, the world, God, and each other.”

BaylorProud » Meet 3 Baylor grads leading on the frontlines of public health

June 1, 2021 // Posted In Alumni, Service
Throughout COVID-19, those on the frontlines of healthcare have received well-deserved accolades. Doctors, nurses, first responders, researchers — all have stepped up to address COVID-19-related challenges. But that’s not the only group on the frontlines; environmental and public health professionals are also out there working to protect the health of their neighbors — and much like the more commonly discussed medical fields, Baylor is well-represented in this group.
Part of the reason Baylor sends so many graduates into environmental health leadership is the strength of its environmental health science program — one of the oldest such programs in the nation, and one of only 30 programs nationally to have its bachelor of science program accredited by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

BaylorProud » Bear Habitat the world's first university facility to earn prestigious AZA accreditation

May 25, 2021 // Posted In Honors
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) sets the gold standard for zoos and aquariums around the world. The very best — those that take the best care of their animals, that offer the best facilities, that have the best long-term plans, etc. — are AZA-accredited.
Currently home to Joy and Lady, two American black bears, the Bill and Eva Williams Bear Habitat was dedicated at Homecoming in 2005. The bears’ home is maintained and staffed by a team that includes student caregivers from the Baylor Chamber of Commerce, trained professionals, and a veterinary care team.
During an extensive site visit in January, AZA representatives were impressed by the world-class care Joy and Lady receive, specifically noting the animal welfare, veterinary care, educational efforts, facility quality and overall investment by the university.

BaylorProud » Baylor volleyball named No. 12 overall seed for NCAA tournament

April 12, 2021 // Posted In Athletics, Honors
It’s been an interesting year for both Baylor volleyball and collegiate volleyball as a whole, thanks to (what else?) COVID-19.
Traditionally a fall sport, the NCAA elected to move the volleyball postseason tournament to spring, and many conferences followed suit and moved their entire seasons to the spring. The Big 12, like the ACC and SEC, elected to play a limited fall season — in the Big 12’s case, playing a conference-only schedule — and then follow that with a short spring schedule to help teams prepare for the postseason.
The Bears went 19-6 on the season — suffering a tough 0-4 record against Texas, the NCAA tournament’s No. 4 overall seed, but going a combined 19-2 against the rest of their schedule. Four first-team all-Big 12 honorees led the way: Pressley, Lauren Harrison, Kara McGhee, and the program’s first-ever Big 12 Libero of the Year, Shanel Bramschreiber.

BaylorProud » EnJOY it — the Baylor Bears are NCAA champions!!!!

From the opening tip, the Bears showed that
they were the nation’s best team, scoring the game’s first nine points and quickly building a double-digit lead. MaCio Teague sparked the Bears with 14 first-half points, while on the defensive end, Mark Vital, Flo Thamba and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua clamped down on Gonzaga’s vaunted front court.
When the Bulldogs cut the lead to nine, the Bears responded with three-pointer after three-pointer, stop after stop, and rebound after rebound in a true team effort. Tournament Most Outstanding Player Jared Butler led the way with 22 points, while Mark Vital pulled down 11 rebounds. In the waning minutes, Drew pulled the starters from the floor into a huge embrace that embodied the team’s culture of J.O.Y., and the Bears soon celebrated a national title.
