Hoa Nguyen, a Portland Public Schools employee and a candidate for David Douglas School Board, said she received a racist note at her Southeast Portland home earlier in March.

Hoa Nguyen was startled awake earlier this month at 6 a.m. by her dog growling followed by an unexpected knock on her Southeast Portland door.
The 37-year-old said that when she answered the door, she discovered a racist two-word note targeting Asians, written in Sharpie, sitting on her doorstep.
Nguyen, who is Vietnamese American, said she first tried to plow through her workday March 19 – juggling her duties as a Portland Public Schools staffer focused on curbing chronic absenteeism while also working on her campaign as a candidate for the David Douglas School board. Four board seats are up for election May 18. ....

TriMet is grappling with how to improve safety on the regional transit system while honoring the racial equity demands of the social justice movement that erupted following the death of George Floyd.
The agency s board of director spent more than three hours discussing the issues during an online retreat on Nov. 19. After reviewing the research and recommendations produced during a months-long community involvement process, the board committed to creating a Crisis Intervention Team to respond to those experiencing mental health issues, increasing the presence of a wide range of agency employees to assist riders on the system, and conducting agency-wide training on anti-racism, cultural competency, mental health, and de-escalation techniques. ....
