The 'Elvis effect' on vaccine hesitancy in the US

Can celebrities help encourage people who are on the fence to get vaccinated?

More than 95 million Americans are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, but there are still many who remain on the fence.
Vaccine hesitancy in the U.S. isn’t new -- it’s something that Americans have seen many times before.
Decades ago, the polio virus was one of the most feared diseases in the United States. The development of a polio vaccine was widely celebrated, but one early batch of the vaccine was manufactured incorrectly, leading to some cases of paralysis and death. When the vaccination program resumed, many were hesitant to get the shot -- especially teenagers.

Meningococcal Vaccine Market to Receive Impetus from Introduction of a Series of Broad-range, Low-cost Vaccines
Meningococcal meningitis is a rare but potentially devastating bacterial infection that targets the brain. Despite growing advances in medical care, the disease can kill the host within a relatively lesser timespan. One in 10 meningococcal meningitis patients die from the disease, and ~15% of the survivors suffer from deadly complications, which typically include brain damage, deafness, or/and amputation.
Partnerships between the private sector and public institutions have been the chief agenda of global public health initiatives. The last few years have witnessed an increase in several private-public partnerships specifically focusing on vaccine provision in developing countries. Partnerships like the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision for Epidemic Meningitis Control (ICG) help magnify the vaccine outreach to remote areas of the world with the maximum need. The governments of several countries across the globe initiate immunisation programmes periodically and these programmes are backed by global organisations such as UNICEF and WHO and private not for profits like the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI).

DONNIE JOHNSTON: To eliminate COVID, everyone needs to get a shot

BY DONNIE JOHNSTON
THE FREE LANCE–STAR
WHEN THE first airplanes took to the sky, there were those who were sure those flying machines would rip open the clouds and allow rain to pour out.
In the 1950s, there were Americans who refused to watch those newfangled television sets because they thought the light rays from the screen would blind them.
And in the 1960s, there were people who believed that sending rockets into outer space was causing hurricanes and tornadoes.
We look back and laugh at such ignorance, even while many Americans today are refusing to take the COVID-19 vaccine because they are sure the government has put a chip in each dose so Washington can track our every move.

Can the Polio Elimination Success Story Breed More Successes in India?

Overcoming formidable biological and sociocultural barriers, India eliminated wild polioviruses from its territory in January 2011. Looking back, it is obvious that the best policy would have been to introduce the inactivated poliovirus vaccine to prevent polio in every vaccinated child, and to use oral poliovirus vaccine by pulse campaigns to eliminate WPVs rapidly. This would have eliminated polio decades ago. Now that WPVs have been eliminated, IPV must be introduced as a prelude to withdrawing OPV. The road ahead is bumpy, but with the important lessons learnt so far, India can no longer pretend that it is too difficult to design a permanent public health infrastructure to control other communicable and non-communicable diseases.

New Delhi, March 16: Home grown Covid-19 vaccines flown to various parts of the world has added luster to India's National Vaccination day -- an occasion celebrating the dissemination of the first dose of oral polio vaccine in 1995. With this launch, the massively successful Pulse Polio Campaign took wings.
At present, one of India's successful vaccination drive is Mission Indradhanus, launched in 2014. This scheme provides vaccination against eight vaccine-preventable diseases nationally. These are diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, measles, severe form of childhood tuberculosis and Hepatitis B and meningitis and pneumonia caused by Haemophilus influenza type B; and against rotavirus diarrhea and Japanese encephalitis in selected states and districts respectively.

From Elvis to Dolly, celebrity endorsements might be the key to countering vaccine hesitancy

The Australian government has secured close to 54 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, as well as 20 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
This is more than enough coronavirus vaccines for the entire population — and then some. But with vaccine hesitancy on the rise in Australia, questions remain over what methods the government will use to persuade enough people to get the jab.
According to a recent study, only three out of five Australians said they are willing to receive the vaccine. However, at least four out of five are needed to ensure herd immunity.
In order to create a sense of urgency among Australians and build trust and confidence in the vaccine, the government may need to look beyond its own public communications campaign to the power of influencers.

The Balamban RHU aimed to immunize at least 95 percent of the children ages zero to 59 months in the municipality, following the mandate of the Department of Health (DOH).
The town records show 8,306 children eligible for the measles-rubella vaccines and 9,810 children eligible for the oral polio vaccines.
Herd immunity
Nurse Grezel B. Bacaron of Balamban RHU said that to be able to get the herd immunity against measles and polio for all children ages zero to 59 months, they need to immunize at least 95 percent of the eligible children.
