Letters: Rename middle school after local Black educator


To the members of Princeton Public Schools Board of Education:
As faith leaders, we believe that the names of our schools should speak to the best of where we have been and who we are, and inspire us to what we seek to become. We were encouraged when in 2020 the Princeton Public Schools decided to listen to the principled appeals of justice-loving communities in Princeton and remove the name of “John Witherspoon” from our local middle school as a remnant of a legacy of slavery, white supremacy, and racial injustice. We were also encouraged when the leadership of our public schools wisely decided to give the community at large (students and community) the opportunity to contribute to the decision-making process for the renaming of the middle school. Democratic decision-making is a hallmark of so many of our healthiest communities and best practices. ....

The Princeton Mercer Regional Chamber will return to hosting in-person events.
The first in-person event on the calendar is June 24’s Business After Business, which will be held at Arm & Hammer Park, home of the Trenton Thunder. The event will run from 5–7 p.m. and will include light appetizers and beer and wine. It is open to both members and non-members.
The summer calendar includes many in-person events:
·         Princeton Pitch Stop, a program of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Council, will be hosted by Grounds for Sculpture on July 13. Rutgers law professor and recent appointee to the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court Elise Boddie will an online talk titled “Struggling for the Soul of Public Education” 6 p.m. Thursday, May 13.
The lecture will address the challenges of integration in the North and why school segregation is a threat to public education and to democracy. After her presentation, Boddie will be in conversation with Lynda Dodd, a lecturer in Public Affairs at Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs who specializes in civil rights and constitutional law. ....
